Album Review

Z.I.N. seem to be well established in Germany, they released two albums before, ‘Symbiosis’ (single) and ‘Tourists to This World’ (LP). ‘The Definition’ is their third album. I actually had to listen to this album four or five times to decide whether I liked it or not. Verdict: I still don’t know. What I know is that I don’t necessary want to listen to it anymore.

It’s quite obvious that the boys aren’t freshmen in the world of music; there are some rather clever tricks on this album, not something that a newbie would think of. I must admit I wasn’t impressed with the first three tracks but the album really did get better later! However, even though it does sound bitchy, this album is somehow academic. Not that there’s anything wrong with being academic, quite the opposite. And I do like how they have played with Ravel’s ‘Bolero’. But it seems like we’re at some strange singing contest - the vocalist sings far too high and, well, it doesn’t always sound as they probably wanted it to, at least not to me. They describe their vocalist as “charismatic” on their MySpace web site; I’m sorry if I make some of you furious but I think “pretentious” is the word for now...

I’m quite sure that this band will become more and more popular; they play good electro, and something you can listen to on your night out. There are some catchy tracks, such as ‘Rent my Soul’. The problem is that this band needs a soul too. I hope they will develop one instead of having to rent it.
