10th of August 2006
Bauhaus, Chants of Malador
Finally it was time again for the darkest festival of the Netherlands, Summer Darkness. Although…. this year it might just not be so dark. Cyber gothic is more popular then before and neon colours are all around. The usual gothic dresses are staying at home this year, plastic outfits are it! The only big metal band this year is Moonspell, that was probably the darkest dressed crowd of the entire festival. With its city walks, the market, the literary readings, the Lolita event and the gothic picnic the Netherlands can be proud of this festival.

Autohof Strohofer, Geiselwind, Germany
20th July – 22nd July 2006
Battle of Metal Festival Part 1 (Day 2): Dark Age, Saltatio Mortis, Vader, Lacrimas Profundere, Unheilig, Soulfly
This year, the Autohof Strohofer in Geiselwind, Germany, had invited for the third time already to a Metal festival, and this summer it took place under the name "Battle of Metal" for the first time. The last two years it was called the "Earthshaker Festival", but due to a splitting of the organizers it was now happening under a new logo. The festival billing was a good mixture consisting of medieval acts like 'Saltatio Mortis' and 'Subway to Sally', but also Gothic ('Unheilig', 'ASP', '69 Eyes' and 'Oomph!') and of course Metal bands like 'Overkill', 'Vader', 'Atrocity' or 'Dimmu Borgir'. The event started on Thursday 20th already, but I couldn't make it to Geiselwind that early, so unfortunately I missed 'Faun' and 'Subway to Sally' and some other acts who played the first festival night.

Bullet For My Valentine, The Analog Project.
The day before playing at Graspop, Bullet For My Valentine was performing in Tivoli de Helling in Utrecht.. Their support act was a band from Nijmegen, Holland, and was called the Analog Project. I was a bit late; I knew it wouldn’t start until 8 o’clock, so I took my time. Later on, I found out it was sold out and that people were crowding up in front of the door around 6 already. This may say something about the popularity of tonight’s bands. TAP started out right on time. The venue was filled up pretty well already, and most people were in for a party. It was quite obvious this sort of music attracts younger people. I think the average age of boys and girls more at the front was about 16 years old. In the back were the older fans and the mums and dads. Everybody was all dressed up in their best alternative and punky outfits with the big beads on their neck and glitzy hairbands, all waiting for Bullet For My Valentine.

This years edition of Waldrock was a bit later then we are used to. Instead of June, this year the first of July the gates of Waldrock would open and treat about 5000 visitors to a traditional metal festival like were used to. First of all: de big difference with the past.. well.. eleven years: the weather. This weekend the temperature rose over 30 degrees Celsius. That means dust, sweat and brining a lot of sunscreen. Together with a lot of great bands the perfect ingredients for a great festival.
