Album Review

THE RASMUS is back! The Finns around LAURI YLÖNEN have been busy recording new music and are proud to present you their newest baby ‘Weirdo’. The band has been founded in 1999, and are now releasing their eleventh full length studio album. While the first four albums were very pop-like, the dark age began with ‘Dead Letters’ in 2003, and their probably best known hit off that album, which was ‘In The Shadows’.

With that song and that album have marked their international breakthrough. Ever since then, the band has been busy playing shows and making more music, touring the world and making new fans all over the place. So, it is no wonder that this new album was highly anticipated. ‘Weirdo’ comes with ten songs and has their very own touch to it. But let me start in the beginning:

‘Creatures of Chaos’ opens the album with an anthem for the outcast. The catchy and thriving melodies are combined with a dark touch to it - the trademark and signature sound of THE RASMUS. On it goes a little wilder: The beginning of ‘Break These Chains’ reminds of the X-FILES or even the STRANGER THINGS melody. And that theme is underlying the entire arrangements. The whole song is powerful and freeing, especially the catchy chorus is.

‘Rest in Pieces’ is a catchy and thriving piece with high potential to get stuck in your head. So beware. ‘Dead Ringer’ brings along interesting lyrics and easy going melodies. The title track ‘Weirdo’ spreads melancholic and tragic. You can feel the heartbreaking sadness with every note. ‘Banksy’ on the other hand comes with funky rhythms, that are not only pushing, but also fast paced. ‘Love Is a Bitch’ comes with an even funkier opening. This super catchy song reminds of 90s pop songs.

‘You Want It All’ brings back the melancholy: With thoughtful and deep lyrics and heavy arrangements, this song is pushing your mind into a wandering state and gets you swaying back and forth. ‘Bad Things’ pulls you out of the melancholy with its rock tunes with a thriving force. ‘I’m Coming for You’ adds a smooth closing to an emotional album.

‘Weirdo’ definitely is a special piece, and very personal too, if you listen closely. It has the signature sound of THE RASMUS and the energy that we all love so much coming from singer LAURI YLÖNEN. Each song has its own style, own character, own message and own emotion. Therefore each song can absolutely standalone without missing context.

Each song is strong on its own, like we could see it on the single releases of ‘Rest In Pieces’ or ‘Creatures Of Chaos’. With catchy rhythms most songs on this album have high potential to turn into an earwig. So press play on this fun album. ‘Weirdo’ by THE RASMUS is out now!
