Album Review
REDEMPTION ZERO is the new musical project from Alan Davis, former bassist and founder member of cult Goth / Alternative band: THE ROSE OF AVALANCHE. ‘The Babylon Sessions’ is the eagerly anticipated first EP from REDEMPTION ZERO. The project draws on Alan’s Post-Punk / Alternative roots while exploring fresh musical territories, with each track offering a unique mood and story.
The EP includes collaborations with guest musicians like Anne-Marie Hurst (GHOST DANCE, SKELETAL FAMILY), Ray Bowles (CHAMELEONS VOX), David Wolfenden (ROSE OF AVALANCHE, RED LORRY, YELLOW LORRY) and Yvette Winkler, (VASELYNE).
The EP introduces us to the band with the title track: ‘(This is) Babylon.’ The synths and vocals hit in perfect unison, opening with a slow, deliberate tempo that gradually picks up with a driving guitar riff. Anne-Marie’s addition beautifully complements Alan’s vocals, creating a dynamic and infectious energy. I wouldn’t be surprised if this track becomes a hit on goth dance floors nationwide. I’ll be recommending this EP to my DJ friends.
Next is ‘Lavinia’, a haunting ballad carried by a slick piano accompaniment, ‘Lavinia’ evokes the mood of EXIT NORTH, but with DAVID BOWIE-esque vocals delivering polished and thoughtful lyrics. The track has a refined, introspective quality that lingers long after listening.
The third track ‘Dead Souls’ has a nostalgic post-punk feel… weaving a gentle, hypnotic guitar riff with occasional bursts of powerful chords, featuring Ray Bowles on bass and David “Wolfie” Wolfenden on guitar. The result is both hypnotic and compelling, a track that stays with you.
For the final track ‘The Darkest Times,’ Alan is joined by Yvette Winkler. A strong guitar riff, poignant lyrics, perfectly harmonised by Yvette - adding an ethereal element to an otherwise nihilistic and bleak dystopian tale…. ‘The Darkest’ Times is the sort of track that gives you goosebumps. It’s an excellent finale to REDEMPTION ZERO’S first release.
Overall, I’m thoroughly impressed. Each track brings its own unique, experimental sound, and the inclusion of guest musicians like Anne-Marie and David Wolfenden keeps the album fresh and intriguing. I’m eagerly awaiting more from REDEMPTION ZERO
Blending dark synth textures, hypnotic guitar riffs, and dynamic vocals, ‘The Babylon Sessions’ crafts a sound that is both experimental and infectious. The guest musicians add layers of depth and intrigue - making REDEMPTION ZERO an exciting, must-listen for fans of goth, synth, and alternative music.
