DEFTONES are known for their extremely unique sound. Somewhere between RADIOHEAD and COHEED AND CAMBRIA, DEFTONES have their very own and unique throne amidst all other sub-genres of Rock music. The band was founded in 1988, but it was not until ‘White Pony’ in 2000 that they reached international success. Now, they have released their tenth full length studio album. Five years after ‘Ohms’, DEFTONES are proudly introducing you to their ‘Private Music’. So step closer and join in on some exclusively and intimate sounding music.
The album begins with ‘my mind is a mountain’, which had already been released earlier in July to announce the upcoming fresh music. The grand arrangements of this song are creating a space you can get lost in right away, while ‘locked club’ is getting your mind to wander. ‘ecdysis’, on the other hand, helps you shed your old skin - feeling fresh and free again. ‘infinite source’ is smoother, and ‘souvenir’ is even smoother, getting you sink in even deeper, especially with the extremely meditative outro.
‘cXz’ continues with ethereal arrangements and elements pushing you further and further. ‘i think about you all the time’ digs deep underneath your skin. ‘milk of the madonna’ comes back a little rougher, rattling at the cage you might fight yourself in. ‘cut hands’ continues strong and edgy. ‘~metal dream’ is comparatively catchy. Alongside beautiful arrangements, this song has potential to get stuck to your head. ‘departing the body’ closes the album with smooth and spacious arrangements and lyrics that are digging deep.
With ‘Private Music’, DEFTONES created an album you can get lost in. Arrangements that sound ethereal and spacious leave room for your mind to wander. If you do not pay a lot of attention to the album itself, the songs easily fade into each other, creating a meditating atmosphere. If you decide to focus on each song, you will discover layer by layer, and find yourself going deeper and deeper into the music, until you ultimately get lost in it.
‘Private Music’ comes with eleven songs, lasting for forty-two minutes in total. The way you lose track of time and space while listening, definitely makes this album “private music” as you will not be able to focus on anything around you while this album is playing.
