Album Review

DAWN HEIST is a five piece Metalcore band from Sydney, Australia, and right from the start of their debut EP, ‘Time Wave Zero’, listeners can already tell that this is going to be big. While keeping a mix of Hardcore/ Metalcore vocals that are deep and brutal along the lines of a band like PARWAY DRIVE with an ensemble of chugging, pummelling guitars, the band also throws in plenty of clean vocal choruses that are more rock oriented in the vein of DIVINE HERESY or ILL NINO as opposed to the more whiny, high pitched vocals heard in typical Metalcore these days. The EP also features lots of electronic elements; from the opening track ‘The Anesthetist’ one might think they were hearing Techno Metal or Gothic Metal with how the song starts out with the beats and then features some robotic, droning vocals before turning into the heavier, Hardcore based sounding riffs. On the opposite side of the spectrum is the track ‘Scarecrow’ which, aside from the backing symphonic elements, just chugs along like a Modern Metal track, bellowing all the way on the verses and then aiming for cleaner vocals- sometimes sung and sometimes spoken- on the chorus. It may sound a bit too similar to a band like FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, but DAWN HEIST are a bit more experimental than their hard hitting peers, which have fallen into a bit of a pattern of where they are comfortable as far as musical structure goes. DAWN HEIST has just begun.

Other highlights include the title track ‘Time Wave Zero’, one of the heaviest tracks on the album. It still features the typical harsh verse/ clean chorus formula, but incorporates a more random, progressive sound as far as the electronic elements go. Usually one can’t hear them over the guitars when they are in full force, but when it can be heard it sounds a lot more random and wild, making up for the predictability of the rest of the music. ‘Loki’ is probably the most predictable track right from the start with how the guitars aim for more of a standard chug and the electronic elements only appear during the chorus, sounding like a backing keyboard as opposed to samples. While ‘Time Wave Zero’ is brief, it gives a good range of what DAWN HEIST is capable of, and already it sounds like it will be pretty massive. It takes the catchy tones of Hardcore while incorporating the experimental elements of Metalcore like acts similar to THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. The balance of Rock and Metal elements are evenly spaced, although the band does fall into a bit of a rut of keeping things pretty much the same with a harsh vocal lead followed by clean vocals. As long as they don’t dominate their future full length debut with the same kind of songs and continue to experiment on the electronic side, they may end up being the new highlight of Metalcore in the coming years.
