Album Review
‘Praying To The World’ is the fourth full length album by the Power/ Symphonic Metal group known as DAWN OF DESTINY. Of course, despite this being a fourth album it may feel like a first for fans who have followed them ever since their debut in 2007. It might feel like a surprise to see that DAWN OF DESTINY took three years instead of their usual one to put this album out, but this is partially because a new vocalist has been added to the ranks. With the departure of Svenja Mills (known as Tanja Maul) to some, Jeanette Scherff takes the reins. Her voice is very similar so it is nearly impossible to tell the difference between both vocalists. As far as the music goes, it still sounds like traditional DAWN OF DESTINY. Tracks like ‘Misunderstood’ is epic with its backing choirs and trade off between male and female clean vocals- especially near the end- and ‘Place Of Mercy’ will satisfy EPICA fans with the dual approach of the beauty and beast vocals along with the keyboards/ piano supporting the riffs.
Other tracks feel more like they are just direct Heavy Metal pieces with an excellent Rock vibe, such as ‘Promised Land’. The chorus still sounds pretty symphonic but mostly a lot of the fluff has been cut and the music focuses mostly on the vocals, drums, and riffs. ‘Bleeding Me’ has a slow, almost electronic based beat which may be something new for most DAWN OF DESTINY fans, but also the slower pace of the music presents something different as opposed to the rather upbeat Power Metal that has dominated most of the album so far. It’s unfortunate the band did not experiment in this vein more to branch out their sound; they throw in some more elements like this in the following ‘One Last Word’, but by the closing ‘Praying To The World’ things pretty much fall back to the usual Gothic tinged Power Metal that sounds like SIRENIA meets NIGHTWISH. Still, for most fans of Power or Symphonic Metal in general they will find DAWN OF DESTINY something enjoyable to hear, whereas older fans will not find the new vocalist a disappointment. Some might even say she has a better range overall, or maybe it is that her music meshes well with the music presented on this album, but it definitely seems like ‘Praying To The World’ was a well developed album compared to the others which might have felt rushed, despite that it takes one too many cues from so many other Symphonic Metal artists out there.
