Album Review

After 10 years since their previous full-length album and some months after their Single the LORDS OF ACID are back with ‘Deep Chills’, an album that moves on the familiar waters of the band. Praga Khan, DJ Mea, and the rest bunch offer here a mixture of fun and dance music with Electro-Industrial overtones, created with the help of their fans. The band doesn’t lack a sense of provocation as well, a feeling that became more obvious when the cover art of this CD was censored. Of course the real party-time on every front starts when you put the CD on. The band isn’t willing to substitute the word “sex” with the word “dance” as the Pop bands are so eager to do, moreover, so when the band has in its mind the sexual fun then what you get is exactly that, and it is done in a way where only the prudes will blush. Unfortunately the weakest point of this CD is exactly the one that the band thinks is its strongest. By investing in the fun aspect of it the band is able to provoke only those who live within the Bible belt. The humour and the canny remarks in the lyrics neutralise the themes whereas amplification was demanded. What you get is an after midnight Electro-pop party with fishnets and the rest of the paraphernalia, deplored as a video-clip full of promises but no action.

But despite all that some of the best moments here (which are highly illustrative of the aforementioned characteristics) are surely ‘Pop That Tooshie’ with Alana Evans to add an extra layer of fun and ‘Children Of Acid’ which moves more closely to the Industrial direction. Along with ‘Little Mighty Rabbit’, ‘Drowning In Ecstasy’, and ‘Surfin’ Hedgehog’ - which has a Surf element - these songs are the undeniable “hits” of the album. On the other hand in ‘Long Johns’ and ‘Mary Queen of Slots’ the band is delving completely into a kindergarten sense of humour and pun. In short, ‘Deep Chills’ brings to my mind the Banksy painting “Anarchist And Mother”, where the hero is enjoying the affection of his mother before he joins the revolution. The fact that the LORDS OF ACID envision this woman as a kinky dominatrix offers only a funny variation to the theme. We can’t have it all indeed, still as long as you play the CD you have a feeling - did I mention it? - of fun. Unfortunately there won’t be much to remember after you removed the CD from the player.
