Album Review
Finnish band ODDLAND was founded in 2002; they were the winners of Suomi Metal Star contest, which secured them a deal with Century Media, their album ‘The Treachery Of Senses’ is their debut. The Progressive Metal they play has a bit of a tinge of grunge; its corpse is resurrected and mixed quite well here, at times they even evoke some doom/ death metal sensibilities and even slight touch of jazz in ‘Flooding Light’. They can boast a strong and excellent vocal (Sakari Ojanen), tight songwriting, smooth sound, each component blending fluidly, the progressive side offering many interesting facets.
Let’s take ‘Sewers’ as an example of interesting songs with its eerie intro of piano notes (that make a few comebacks to lend ambience) bursting into dark bass and Ojanen joined by female vocals, even some death metal ones later on, the song moving from soft, weird, dark to fierce. The songs are emotive but not really overbearingly intense. Examples would be ‘In Endless Endeavour’, a beautiful and intricate, slower song coming to a quite an epic ending. As a debut it’s quite impressive, the level of musicianship is accomplished and a great deal of skill is apparent, their vocalist is outstanding. ODDLAND had delivered interesting, striking music that leaves you waiting for what comes next, a truly promising band.
