Album Review

The Slovakian bad LAST INFLUENCE OF BRAIN was founded in 1998 with members of another Slovakian project we recently reviewed: SAMHAIN. One Demo and an EP called ‘Escape’ have been released before they debuted with ‘Illusions & Reality’ in 2004 an album gaining mixed reactions. About 3 years after the debut, the project returns with ‘Inner Wars’ in 2007.

The album’s start is marked by ‘Return I’ which is , obviously, the first part of a series of sequentially named instrumental intermezzos, appearing in different shapes throughout the album, I assume they’re used as a kind of chapter marks to distinct one part of the story from the other. Any way let’s start with the first track ‘Greed’ starting with a short sampled intro section, blending into a seemingly Eastern influenced melody which is to stay the leading melody while builds up tension and intricateness, forming oppressive patterns at times – and amidst the swirling complexity emerges a rather typical distorted voice,  a standard tool for every Dark Electro project but it wouldn’t be fair to label the project as a mere proxy of the genre just because of that and they aren’t; impressively documented by tracks like ‘Missing Meaning’ which is developing from a small fluctuating sequencer line to a grooving piece that always comes up with some surprises, a twisted sequence here; or an unusual beat construction appearing all of a sudden. That they can also handle good old EBM shows the track ‘Players’ well maybe not exactly pure EBM as it’s beefed up with a blend of precisely crafted samples and, surprising for me, some fidgety rhythmic parts resembling Drum’n’Bass insets embedded into the background and switching channels.

Following the third part of the ‘Return’ instrumental series and the subsequent song ‘The Ends Beginning’ a track placing emphasis on the band’s skills to create abstract rhythmical layers full of elaborate beauty, is the song ‘Why You Are Waiting?’ suddenly turning the wheel into an unexpected direction. After a usual sinister introduction with extended atmospherics and even droning tones, a slow almost organic sounding drum section kicks in. The vocals on this track, rather appearing as an instrument than taking a narrative part, come as a floating stream on top of choral swells, heavily effected but a great idea. ‘Too Far Outlying’ maybe isn’t sounding so much organic but it’s continuing the theme of being a dark and brooding creature. The vocals are barely understandable and only reaching the ears as a low evil whispering. The interspersed piano parts spread a nostalgic flair like they would originate from an old silent movie or something, a bit strange to hear that in an electronic track but I admit I like it. ‘What this World is about’ ends the roundelay o f vocalized tracks with a subtly aggressive tune, scoring with a detailed rhythm; and with its varied use of differently processed vocals; at times you can even hear real singing and that is something the guys should continue on the next album, maybe with a bit less effects if possible.

‘Return IV & V’ end the regular tracklist with two eclectic pieces of instrumental music. As a bonus ‘Inner Wars’ comprises the Electromorphosis RMX of ‘Why you are waiting’ made by French electro artist BRAIN LEISURE and as expected it gives the song a whole new appearance. The drum programming is faster and displays more density; he granted the melodies much more room and as for the vocals; they now resemble a robot. ‘Inner Wars’ is a good compromise between complexity and straight electronics. Sometimes it tends to swing more in one or the other direction, but it never gets too much; and it’s technically well done, so there’s nothing to complain about on that side either. I do hope the will follow the approach of cleaner vocals further as the voice seems to be quite good.
