Album Review

THE NARROWS hail from Manchester and are waking up the Northern UK with their excellent sound and rocking the crowds that come to sample the more meaningful alternative to the mainstream. On their way through underground music they’ve also been included on a compilation album by Squealing Beagle Records. As I review their single ‘Through Constant Decay’ here they are hard at work on their album.

THE NARROWS’ vision is dark, piercing and impassioned, addressing the murk of the post 9/11 world with its heavy gravity’s impact on the mind, the darkness in heart, and the void best summed up by their own words - “I bled a whole belief away tonight.” (‘Waterboarding’). Their music underlines the intensity of the existential quandaries portrayed in their well written and thought out lyrics superbly. The loops and keyboards and the screeching guitars, samples and the vocal narration of Phil Drinkwater altogether create the perfect illustration of what they’re getting across - it’s not only music that sounds great but they also have something to say and what’s more - it’s relevant.

In regards to “what they sound like” it’s hard to nail it down, maybe RED SPAROWES, ISIS, THE MARS VOLTA but the comparison has such wide margins which only deepens the impression that they’re quite unique, having absorbed whatever influences they had perfectly into their very own sound. The aforementioned ‘Waterboarding’ was my favourite pick from the single with its eerie start, soaring and atmospheric vocal echoed by the two backing vocals and music underscored by both clear and distorted guitars that pull and lock one right into it.

‘Through Constant Decay’ is an accomplished single of a band that surely has a future with a good promise of longevity - original and unique bands are never aplenty and should always be appreciated! Don’t miss out on either this single or their upcoming album!
