Album Review

Formed in 1983, the first incarnation of TESTAMENT was named LEGACY. The band was founded by guitarist Eric Peterson, guitarist Derrick Ramirez and drummer Louie Clemente. The roster was completed by vocalist Steve “Zetro” Souza and bassist Greg Christian. Before the band managed to record and publish their debut the vocalist was replaced by Chuck Billy. With the new vocalist they recorded their first output ‘Legacy’ now under the name of TESTAMENT. The band put out seven albums after ‘Legacy’ and compiled a massive following in the years from 1983 to 2001. This year was proved fateful for the band and especially for Chuck Billy who was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer in the chest area. Chuck Billy managed to fully recover from that critical illness unlike DEATH frontman Chuck Schuldiner who died in the year of 2001 after being diagnosed with a cancerous tumour in his brain. The saying “what doesn`t kill you makes you stronger” applies to Chuck Billy, that’s for sure.

After recovery TESTAMENT didn`t hit the studio right away but in the end they did and recorded ‘The Formation of Damnation’. Four years later the guys spawned ‘Dark Roots of Earth’ much to critical acclaim. “Dark Roots of Thrash” is a live testimonial of the tour that followed their latest studio album. Fans of TESTAMENT and the Bay Area Thrash movement of the 80`s will find everything they love on this live cd, the whole band was in a very exciting shape at the time of the recording and every thrash fanatic will instantly wish to have been there in Huntington, New York. Chuck Billy still sounds like 24; he still is pure concentrated aggression and power. The rest of the band just destroys the place in a manner that makes you think that the location of the gig was left completely devastated. I, for one had a blast listening to these guys, a must buy for every TESTAMENT fan.
