EP Review
‘Schwarze Sonne’ EP, that preceded the third full-length album of German dark metal act SCHWARZER ENGEL, came out in May and only now appeared in my player but better late than never. Just as it was to be expected the record is up to the high standard specified with the previous released of the project. The EP contains four tracks, rather dismal ‘Der Fährmann’ and three versions of ‘Schwarze Sonne’ to be exact. Speaking about ‘Der Fährmann’, the title of the song already arouses the image of Charon from Greek mythology. The beautiful expressive music, profound vocals and interesting picturesque bleak lyrics complete the whole story totally immerging into the dreary but mesmerizing atmosphere of the world of the dead.
The album version of ‘Schwarze Sonne’ opens the EP. The song is simply wonderful also thanks to the great voice of Johanna von Orleans from E NOMINE. Two piano versions featuring El Friede from OOMPH! show new sides of the song. The instrumental one is absolutely fantastic. In general the EP produces an indelible impression with such a sound variety and depth and is highly recommended to all fans of good music.
