Interview with

Sleepin Pillow

Sleepin Pillow’s music philosophy is based on bringing together the Greek and the Eastern traditional music along with the modern psychedelic rock. They recently released their debut CD "Apples on an orange tree".

I. For start, I would like you to analyze each song of yours, like the meaning, hidden messages or whatever you consider important to mention.
 i. Instrument of Time
 ii. Black Sea
 iii. The Light Is Real
 iv. Motherhood
 v. Drug
vi. A Thousand Times To Spell
 vii. Hail Messiah
 viii. Winter Dreams
ix. Apple on an Orange Tree
 x. Amplifier in my Heart
 xi. Rise
 xii. Holy Monster
xiii. Drop the Mask
“Plato often stated in his writings that we are all instruments of time which is as grand as it is obvious to those that can fathom it. Everything else is acts of egoism, insecurity and simply pertains to lies.  There are references to this in both Drop The Mask and Hail Messiah. From the moment we are brought to this world we are thrown into a world of cogs and wheels that direct our actions.  From state to religion and society we are given a definition of good and bad from someone else.  That is where the true person begins to doubt, to come into conflict with every stereotype as the relevance goes in Drug, Motherhood and Apples On An Orange Tree.  In the end, only love and intimacy exist as tracks like Thousand Times To Spell, Rise and even Winter Dreams come to display.”

II. Your album “Apples on an Orange Tree” is already in stores. What were your inspirations and what do you expect from this record?
“Our musical influences are vast mainly due to the fact that we listen to most kinds of music.  What shaped the album’s sound, though, were our own personal experiences in relation to the whole of our surrounding environment.  The way we define ourselves, our relations, what we intend to show with our beliefs and our desires.  We want our music to be our own and not someone else’s and we are confident our songs can be heard by everyone.”

III. What do you aim at by experimenting with several kinds of music?
“In truth, as cliché as it may sound, there’s only one kind of music.  We intend to continue bringing the beautiful things music has to offer to everybody into the light – asking to be forgiven for it – and we intend to do so until we reach the end of the road.”

IV. What is your philosophy and ideology for music as a general entity?
“The existence of music makes everybody its potential expressionist.  What we sing, play and in the end experience were always there.  All we do is give it flesh and bone, quite like the millions of breaths waiting to become words in the incorporeal world of souls.”

V. According to you, what is worth waiting all night till dawn?
“Death and Love.. it’s always a beautiful thing when you don’t come across the former come dawn.   And come dawn it’s almost death when you don’t come across the latter.”

VI. Humans, gods, demons, hallucinations, feelings… Where does your faith dwell? Is there a commonly approved reality, at all?
“There is no commonly approved or accepted reality and its existence borderlines on utopia.  Every entity selects the way its mind will perceive reality, what form it will be given through its eyes and how it will act within the whole of the world.  After all reality is never what we only see and perceive with our basic senses and it tends to be more what we don’t. Humans are both sides of the same coin as it spins in the air.”

VII. In some of your songs there is an essence of eroticism, either within the melodies or the words. In what level does love affects our way of thinking? Could love be compared with a deep, vast ocean never able to be fully explored?
“It’s blatant irony when you can dive into the abyss of the Philippines and on the other hand drown in a spoonful of water.  That’s how love is.  That’s how the human being is.  And the whole journey from decay to divinity in relation to love is what we live through and consequently try to express through our music using different ways, constantly trying to remain intact in a battle that’s definitely unfair.”

VIII. Is time a friend or a foe?
“It’s all a matter of decision of who you want to be in time and space.  You can be in a movie theater eating chips and commenting on everything while toying with your cellphone, or you can simply watch the film and see your life change forever…”

IX. The venues you choose to have your concerts are undoubtedly…different. You provide simplicity with a theatrical hint. Do these choices represent your actual aspects and hopes for this band?
“Everything that’s beautiful derives from simplicity and that’s exactly what we want to forward with our concerts.  The ritual part of it is sort of a natural condition for us.  If this is not agreeable with some people then the problem is definitely not ours…”

X. And as the curtain falls, what is your ultimate winter dream?
“To find myself on an ice cream...”

XI. Thank you deeply for the chance to share some really interesting words with you.
"Thank you back."
