Album Review

It’s three years since Arne Schaub unleashed the last TRÜMMERWELTEN album ‘Optimiertes Leiden’ and 2008 sees the imminent return of the project with their newest instalment ‘Psycho Tötungs Equipment’…

…and everything starts with an annoying background noise that soon disappears and opens the gates into the realms of TRÜMMERWELTEN with ‘Dein Bild’, a track relying on pummelling beat patterns and not very convincing distorted vocals. ‘Dead End Row’ sounds like BLUTENGEL did an excursion into industrial; whether this is a good or bad combination is a matter of personal taste as always. However, it’s a very melodic piece of music with English vocals with lightly distorted beats. With ‘Wir sind verrückt’ we return to German lyrics and also the tempo has increased. Apart from that it’s a rather generic industrial track with some likeable melody lines. ‘Covering behind the Mask’ starts quite slow with vocals that are a little better than the ones I heard before, but still not really good. The track subsequently speeds up and enters more danceable territory. The track with the well-sounding name ‘BückStück’ picks up the old recipe of stomping beats and distorted vocals to create a genuine club stomper, but it’s nothing more than that and it strangely reminds me of a track from AGONOIZE called ‘Femme Fatale’. With ‘Light of Knowledge’ the sound of a piano finds its way into a TRÜMMERWWELTEN composition and enriches the otherwise quite boring track with a melodic gadget. “The light of knowledge shines on shit, please let me be shit and I won’t forget anything” The closing track ‘The Painful Fact’ shows a similarity to ‘Covering behind the Mask’ with its slow starts, though this one has some darker sounds. It actually shows some tempo and rhythm changes later, but that’s the only surprise here.

A promo text I’ve read on the album said that this would come close to a fusion of Chris Pohl’s SEELENKRANK project and intelligent industrial. This term surely wouldn’t cross my mind if I had to find a proper stylistic description for the music. The sounds are generic, no real surprises and I’ve heard much better vocals before. If you liked TRÜMMERWELTEN before, than you’ll probably like this one too. For all the others: Hands off this release
