Album Review

PSYCHONAUT75 was formed in 1997 by Michael W. Ford as a ritualistic project and released several albums based on magic and explorations of the mind. The project saw its rebirth with a new line-up in 2001 with the result of releasing the harsh industrial album ‘Stealing the Fire from Heaven’, a split CD with Aesthetic Meat Front, featuring the use of human bones in the music. In 2008 Michael joins forces with two other artists who add new facets to the sound and the first musical result is the Infection EP.

Already at the beginning of the first song it gets quite clear to which sound they’re dedicated. The old school dark electro; and so it’s no wonder that you can find reminisces to the early material of such bands like yelworC. Coming back to the music, there’s ‘Godeater’ as the first track, starting with shamanic female chant to the sound of sustained dark tones. A specialty of this track is its use of ritualistic tribal rhythms (Maybe Bones?) that, in the further course almost get drowned by the electronic elements. A pity, I found it to be an interesting approach worth to pursue further. ‘Infection’ comes up with driving, but in the end very simple and unspectacular rhythm patterns, however these vocals give me the creeps. ‘Insect to Swarm’ picks up a little of the ritualistic approach I mentioned earlier and combines it with ghostly soundscapes and violin later to be complemented with both distorted and clean male and female vocals. The story we get to hear in ‘Trauma’ is like an evil nursery rhyme you can frighten your children to bed with. With tonal support of deeply droning synth layers and a creepy chime. Subsequently, the track more or less gets lost in industrial sound collages and rather generic beats.

I think there’s still a lot work to do for this project. Sound-wise they have to improve a lot. It doesn’t have to sound polished, but not like 1990 either; and a few more complex rhythms couldn’t hurt as well. The approach with the tribal drums is a path they should follow further and integrate a lot more of it into the tracks. Sounds really good
