In the course of EMI Music’s restructuring there have always been rumours popping up, saying Mute founder Daniel Miller was interested in extracting the label form the EMI company again after it’s been sold to then 8 years ago. Now both sides have found a way:

Daniel Miller founds a new company and licensing the name Mute from EMI for it. The Mute acts DEPECHE MODE, GOLDFRAPP, RICHARD HAWLEY, KRAFTWERK and WHITE RABBITS remain with EMI. Daniel Miller and his team will take care of the interests of NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS, GRINDERMAN, YEASAYER, ERASURE, ANDY BELL, LIARS, POLLY SCATTERGOOD or A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS. In Germany, Miller can rely on a seasoned employee: Anne Haffmans, taking care of Mute releases already end of the 1990s at then-Intercord, is taking over label management for Germany and Austria from Berlin. Mute is working with Rough Trade and GoodToGo as distribution partners there; in Switzerland that would be Musikvertrieb.

As part of the EMI deal, Daniel Miller is cooperating with the new Mute company in Great Britain and Ireland, as well as the US and Canada in all things sales and distribution, and in licensing with the division EMI Label Services. Apparently, Miller and EMI have also found solutions on how to integrate EMI UK and USA employees into the company following a transitional period.
