Smashing Pumpkins
Who doesn’t remember ‘Bullets with Butterfly Wings’, ‘Zero’ and ‘1979’ sung by this big bald guy with a grating voice? THE SMASHING PUMPKINS somehow were able to create a certain magic in their melancholic songs that made them very popular in the 1990s. With only front man Billy Corgan left from the original line-up, the mastermind and heart of the SMASHING PUMPKINS still stands in 2011.
The sound of THE SMASHING PUMPKINS incorporates elements from gothic rock, grunge, heavy metal, dream pop, psychedelic rock, progressive rock and later on also electronics. Being one of the most successful alternative rock bands of the 1990s took its toll and in 2000, internal fighting and drug use lead to a break up of the band. In 2005, drummer Jimmy Chamberlin and front man Corgan announced a new SMASHING PUMPKINS album called ‘Zeitgeist’. They’ve been touring with a rotating line-up until 2009. Then Chamberlin left the band. Billy completed the line-up of THE SMASHING PUMPKINS again and is currently recording the albums ‘Teargarden by Kaleidyscope’ and ‘Oceania’.
