The almost 30-year history of TAKE THAT is one of the most exciting and unpredictable in British music history. It is a story of close friendships and deep quarrels, breath-taking successes and surprises that even the original five members never thought possible. In England alone, the band has collected 80 times Platinum for their albums and singles, and also in Germany four of their long-player rose to the top 4 of the charts - especially the two albums ‘Beautiful World’ and ‘Progress’, both platinum Received honours. In 2017, TAKE THAT, which has been a trio since the end of 2014, released its eighth album ‘Wonderland’, which has become an international bestseller as usual. In June 2019, TAKE THAT come to Germany on their world tour for the band’s 30th anniversary for four concerts in Düsseldorf, Berlin, Hamburg and Frankfurt with a new greatest hit album in their luggage.
The original idea for TAKE THAT was obvious: British music manager Nigel Martin-Smith wanted to break the dominance of American boy bands in 1990 and establish his own male vocal group in England. It all began with the gifted Gary Barlow, who had been composing songs since he was seven. With Howard Donald, Mark Owen, Jason Orange and Robbie Williams were gradually recruited the other heads for TAKE THAT, then it went into the studio. Already the debut album, ‘Take That & Party’, proved to be an excellent success, rose to #2 in the UK charts and threw off the first three hit singles, including the classics advanced cover version ‘Could It Be Magic’.
With the second album, ‘Everything Changes’, began in 1993 the unstoppable triumph of TAKE THAT. As many as four single releases topped the UK charts, the album rose in the top 10 in Europe. After only three years, the quintet had reached the top of the European Pop superstars. The successor, ‘Nobody Else’, proved in 1995 as even more successful, reached among others in England, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Holland, Austria and many other countries place 1 of the charts. The single ‘Back For Good’ topped even the charts in 31 nations. They won numerous BRIT and MTV Europe Music awards and were among the big live-backers in the mid-90s. It seemed that the band could not achieve anything, which ultimately led to the dissolution of TAKE THAT on February 13, 1996.
As a result, Gary Barlow, but especially Robbie Williams lifted off to international solo careers. Williams just became one of the planet’s biggest Pop stars; it seemed like TAKE THAT was history forever. But things turned out differently: ten years after their demise, members met again for a BBC documentary about TAKE THAT. Old quarrels were settled, one was more mature, older, more relaxed - and so they first planned a new tour, which became one of the most successful in the history of British Pop music, and the comeback album ‘Beautiful World’ joined. With this work, TAKE THAT - initially without Williams - could easily build on the old successes.
After the fifth album, ‘The Circus’ of 2008, which was also internationally successful, even the lost fifth man Williams returned to the band for two years. It was followed by a tour and recorded in quintet strength album ‘Progress’, which goes down as TAKE THAT’s most successful work in the history. After another tour, Williams and Jason Orange decided in 2014 to leave the band for good. Since then, the remaining three with the two albums ‘III’ (2014) and ‘Wonderland’ (2017) convinced that TAKE THAT as a trio work and harmonize wonderfully. Since September 2017, all five - at least as their alter egos, played by personally selected performers - also live together again, because since then runs in London’s West End the musical ‘The Band’, based on the songs and the story of TAKE THAT. It should not surprise anyone that the play became the fastest selling British theatre production of all time.
