Album Review

Danish band ALL TRAYS FOR VENOM started their adventure in 2008 and soon after they released a demo entitled ‘Bring Back The Pain’. In 2009, they released EP ‘ATFV’. Remarkably, the EP was released through Fairtrade Music and buyers were allowed to choose their own price with 25% going to charity. ‘Burned By Blackened Sun’ is their last production and a first step into professional music business.

In their official press release, ALL TRAYS FOR VENOM emphasize the importance of experiment and creativity, something you will definitely find on their new album. Not only because drums were recorded at the bottom of a swimming pool and because the band requested fans to be involved in the lyric writing process what resulted in a successful submission by Steve Claypool that inspired the band to write ‘Scars Of You’. This production seems to have many layers and it is quite a pleasure to unravel them one by one when listening. ‘Burned by Blackened Sun’ is a remarkably punchy piece of work. Every single sound seems to be sunk deeply in this energy, so even though the album is really versatile style-wise, it remains rather coherent and focused.

Personally, I cannot escape the feeling that ALL TRAYS FOR VENOM are heavily inspired by the Gothenburg scene. Nearly every track carries a strong resemblance to melodic death metal through guitar riffs, occasional double-bass drum patterns and combination of clear and distorted vocals. Combined with elements of traditional metalcore, I find it to be a very appealing. There are also elements of trash metal that pop up every now and then such as guitar riffs and drums in ‘This Love Is Damned To Hell’ and ‘Waves of Destruction’. ‘Burned by Blackened Sun’ is a decent album that will not disappoint. Musically, it is not as tough and raw as EARTH CRISIS or HATEBREED but it belches out the same wicked energy. If anything, this album seems to be a little bit repetitive and from time to time you will not escape a justified feeling of déjà vu. But it worth checking out and I am more than sure that the band will get far if they continue on this path.
