Album Review

I enjoy discovering for myself new interesting bands and musicians and this time CHRIS PUREKA has become a nice discovery. CHRIS PUREKA is an American acoustic singer-songwriter whose popularity grows every day and whose concerts attract more and more people. In February his fifth studio album entitled ‘How I Learned to See in the Dark’ was released in Germany and now it’s time to throw some light on it.

So what we have here: beautiful tuneful acoustic melodies, good vocals and thought-provoking lyrics, that’s just the exact description of CHRIS PUREKA’s music. There’s nothing superfluous and excessive, only songs which are able to touch listeners’ souls with their sincerity and simplicity. Actually it’s better to listen to the whole album once, than to read tons of reviews. Such music is especially valuable now when very often everything is made on the computer and synthetic sounds replace ‘live’ ones. Sometimes you just need something different and refreshing. And ‘How I Learned to See in the Dark’ is that very pill you need to broaden your musical point of view. The album starts with invigorative ‘Wrecking Ball’ with its special somewhat blues appeal and deep vocals.

‘Hangman’ turns to be another story with an absolutely different atmosphere and inimitable mood. Step by step, one song after another gradually and unobtrusively a listener is falling under CHRIS PUREKA’s charm even if at first he or she could be sceptical about such music. It’s hard to name the best tracks off the album as every song is good in its own way but I just try to mark out a couple of them that pleased me most of all. And they are fascinating ‘Barn Song’ and of course ‘Song for November’ that attracted me immediately even with its title and didn’t disappoint after listening. In general the whole album may seem interesting to any audience and no need to listen to it to appreciate or analyse, just enjoy the sound. Is it possible to learn to see in the dark? Well, after the first listening I can say ‘yes, definitely’, yet everyone should decide for themselves.
