Album Review

After fifteen years of existence, the controversial German EISREGEN have released their 8th studio record, the follower of albums such as ‘Zerfall’ (1998), ‘Leichenlager’ (2000), or the indexed ‘Wundwasser’ (2004). If you are into Extreme Metal and have never even heard about EISREGEN, you surely made a mistake. Due to their provocative and morbid lyrics, many of their albums are on the index and nowadays, most concerts are only allowed for people older than 18. They are also a widely-discussed band, splitting the metal scene into lovers and haters.

‘N8Verzehr’is introduced with a sung lullaby and soon a screaming woman; the main riff is simply constructed but the song appears to be pretty fast and catchy - the lyrics are in German and even though screamed easy to understand and roughly cope the eating of children. Keyboards and clean vocals add a darker but more melodic aspect to the music, so even though not the heaviest music ever is created, the atmosphere is fittingly underlined. The following ‘Blute Aus’ also begins very fast and lyrically deals with self-destructive perversions; the middle part is anyways constructed in a rocking and grooving manner. Already after those two songs, it becomes clear that EISREGEN will not let go of their usual trademarks: provoking lyrics with relatively simple and catchy music.

‘Auf Ewig Ostfront’ as well as ‘Tod senkt sich herab’ are about war, a recurring motif in EISREGEN’s discography. The second one suitably begins with a hooter and a marching rhythm, the following minutes are a mixture between fast and melodic (cliché stringed instruments…) elements. Yet, the content is well conveyed, since the drumming combines march and bombing approaches. ‘Ernte den Untergang’ deals about exterminating the human race; yet, it is hard to put the topics into a nutshell, since they are rather complex and mature. ‘Zauberelefant’ (Elephant doing magic) appears to be about a man, who feeds his overweight wife more and more (‘as soon as spring is going to come, she will weigh six hundred pounds’ ‘as soon as summer is going to come, she will weigh seven hundred pounds), yet this song also combines speedy with slow parts, composing the different aspects of this situation.

‘Kai aus der Kiste’ is definitely the slowest song on ‘Schlangensonne’: with piano melodies, the destiny of an unloved and unwanted child is underlined. Also, some industrial tendencies can be heard in this song. ‘Linkshänder’ gains up speed again whilst ‘Das Allerschlimmste’ is very sardonic and malicious - ranting about a long known person and naming all its bad attributes. ‘Schlangensonne’ again musically combines hard and soft, melodic parts as well as mid-tempo elements, being a suitable title-track. ‘Brustfetichrist’ ends the album and again is remarkable for EISREGEN’s trademarks. Consequently, ‘Schlangensonne’ is an album that combines the essence of EISREGEN, various themed lyrics combined with dark metal, catchy but not very technical or too heavy. Fans of the band will surely like this album whilst haters better avoid it.
