Album Review

The thing that I really love about the team of n1n0 & din-tah aeon, whether it's in DEIED or one of their other projects, is that you never know what you're going to get. After my last DEIED review I felt inclined to check out their back catalogue and “eclectic” doesn't begin to cover it. And of course there was the sublime AEON SABLE album that took the duo into the dark realms of Gothic Rock. So I'm very intrigued as to where this album is going to go sound wise - whether it will follow the Harsh / Terror EBM path as some albums have, or whether it will go down a more Industrial Gothic route? From the outset of the album it's immediately obvious that DEIED are going to do both, and more. There are the familiar elements from Industrial, EBM, Metal, and Gothic all put into a blender to create something entirely different.

‘Tribal’ opens the album with a Martial Industrial feel that breaks out the terrifying deep, growling vocals run through distortion for an intimidating intro. ‘Slave’ is more of a familiar DEIED sound with more of a Harsh EBM feel - not so much a dance floor classic, but more of a sit down and pay attention track. ‘Pandora’ goes into rockier territory with some big sounding drums, a very catchy synth lead and those distinctive vocals. ‘Playing God’ is dark and infectious despite its atmospheric production - it lures you into dancing without you realising it. ‘Lost in Space’ almost sounds like an old school APOPTYGMA BERZERK track except with confrontational vocals and a more minimalist sound. ‘Black Number 6’ uses those classic DEIED synth sounds over a subtle driving beat and those big vocal effects that turns what you think will be another minimalist track into a bit of a sing-a-long affair.

‘Noctem’ is frustratingly subdued - as a track it works, it's just that you think it's going to be a hard and fast dance track but instead it goes of into a more complex area. ‘4’ feels like a rock track with it's drums and guitar sounds, but the ambient synths and quiet yet gritty vocals make it more of a piece of ambient industrial - it sounds like it shouldn't work but this band has a tendency to make things work no matter what. ‘The Man with the Black Coat’ however, works as an almost ballad with its big guitar, clean vocals, and ambient electronics. ‘Wind’ is a very nice closing track - its ambient electronics, strong central beat, and clean German sung vocals recalls the feeling of tracks like ‘Schattentanz’.

Once again DEIED have crafted something unique, refined and intelligent. They pretty much are the definition of a thinking man's band using elements common to popular genres and, while not turning them against the listener per se they certainly confound them, opting instead to take them into very different places. As usual with DEIED the album is free with the option to donate money to the band which means you have no excuse for not getting a copy of this album.
