Album Review

I love it when you here something that just feels like it’s a calamitous “Fuck You!” to the establishment. DEIED are one of those bands that make decent music and still release it under the Creative Commons license. This combined re-release of the band’s sixth and seventh albums is a dual attack of aggressive dark electro-industrial mayhem. Lo-fi and predominately synthesizer based it manages to incorporate elements of Extreme Metal and traditional Industrial that makes for a terrifying yet catchy sound.

The first disc is the remixed and re-mastered 2008 album ‘…The…End…’ which kicks off with the minimalist electro introduction of ‘Fuego’ that flirts with the dancier end of the EBM spectrum before fading into the destructive dance beats of ‘Hard Stuff’. Taking its cues from hard, danceable EMB it counterpoints this with terrifying Extreme Metal vocals for an altogether harsher feel. ‘She Master’ veers into old Laibach and Velvet Acid Christ territory with it’s Marshal beats and rough growled vocals whereas ‘Hope’ opts for a machinegun drum sound layered upon hard electronic loops and softer synthesizers for a insane and hopeless feeling.

‘Monster’ has a dark danceable feel, almost like a Covenant remix, with that classic EBM synth sound and solid driving beat, though maybe too heavy for most clubbers it could easily make its way into a few DJ’s rotations. ‘Wilder Wind’ on the other hand has a more experimental and ethnic feel to it in the use of guitars and the way the vocals are sung to make it a very interesting track. ‘Liar’ has a classic dark-electro feel to it with some Skinny Puppy like vocals, catchy synthesizers and toe tapping drums before the heavy guitars come in on the chorus - excellent track. ‘Far From Home’ again has that dark-electro feel to it that counteracts a lot of the harshness of the previous tracks to show the talent and versatility of the band.

The second disc, the again remixed and re-mastered ‘Poisoned Wisdom’, starts with the altogether more sinister ‘Ancient Rites’ - with its simple but apocalyptic feel it’s about as menacing as the band can get. The altogether more aggressive ‘Evil Mind’ taps into that militaristic Industrial beat once again for another scary but toe-tapping track. ‘Schattentanz’ has a more pronounced Gothic Rock feel to it with it’s central bass guitar, which gives the song a very melancholic vibe - a very nice change of pace for the band. ‘Living’ breaks out the Harsh EBM loops again for a more experimental but infectious kind of track that the band pull off so well. ‘I am the Centre’ goes down the gritty traditional Industrial route that is in both parts melancholic and powerful.

‘Imported Gods’ recaptures that Gothic Rock vibe once again with a nod to American Darkwave once again showing how talented this duo is. ‘Dying’ has a Nitzer EBB feel to its drum beat with a heavy spattering of subdued, echoing vocals for a danceable but intelligent track that begs to be listened to rather than danced to. ‘Morning Sun’ makes use of the bands synthesizer skills once again for a Covenant-a-like slice of dark-electro which makes for another stand-out track. The final song on the album is the cheeky electro ‘Candy’ that sounds not unlike one of Kraftwerk’s more accessible pieces and closes the album with more questions than answers about the band’s manifesto.

This package is great. Albeit the band’s approach can sometimes come off a little scattergun with so many styles and genres vying for supremacy. But on the whole this is a great example of a band with a lot of talent making great music and expecting nothing in return - anything that they receive by way of critical acclaim, applause or fan donations is a bonus. That alone is worth recognition, but the fact that this is available as a free download should make it essential listening for fans of electronic music.
