Album Review

Guitarist JEFF AUG is probably most notable for his work with ANNE CLARK: He’s performed over a 1,000 concerts up until now and convinced with his solo acoustic guitar program as opener for e.g. RUSH, QUEENSRYCHE, ALBERT LEE, STAR SOUNDS ORCHESTRA, SOFT MACHINE, ALLAN HOLDSWORTH and FREAKY FUKIN WEIRDOZ. On 13th March 2009 he’s releasing the solo album ‘Living Room Sessions’.

Already the first small track ‘Boots on Fire’ proves what an ingenious guitarist JEFF AUG Is and my second thought regarding this fast-played track was “Any other human being probable would knot together its fingers when trying to repeat that.” On ‘One Twenty’ this danger is not given. It’s more of a laid-back, smoothly floating. I’m always imagining it must’ve been played on a sunny day. It’s just the way it sounds that makes me feel that way. The feeling I connect to ‘Highlife’ while listening to it is sheer happiness. Just as if someone received very good news a few seconds before and the first reaction is getting out of the house and showing it to the world. One of the scenes from a movie comes to mind here when someone’s running through the streets, occasionally jumping with a big smile on his face because life feels so wonderful this moment. It seems to me like the elegant, ringing chords of ‘Musicbox Ballerina’ mimic the delicate moves of a dancer fluidly blending from one into the other. Just beautiful!

‘Hoedown on a Chicken Farm’ is just what the title suggests. I’m always seeing people on the countryside having a party in a barn, dancing driving by the rhythm of the drums and the challenging lines of the guitar and to underpin the atmosphere we have animal samples at the beginning and the end. It’s amazing how Jeff’s conjuring pictures with his music because even without the title ‘Louisiana Voodoo Blues’ one’s thinking of the Southern Realms of America, The Mississippi right off. ‘September’ is the month we all associate in some way with autumn and with autumn also comes melancholy which is exactly what comes off the track ‘September’. It brings forth these certain emotions and it’s somehow teleporting you to that time of the year when the leaves first bloom in various colours to get cast off by the tree eventually. I could listen to this one over and over again and the next one ‘Whenever it Comes’ seems to have kind of a spiritual connection with it in regards to its mood whereas it’s still a little more different. Listen to it and you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

‘Living Room Sessions’ is a collection of music I can honestly recommend to all admirers of virtuously played acoustic guitar music. If you just love acoustic guitar music it’s something for you too. A really special kind of music and don’t get scared off by the short duration of some of the tracks. That doesn’t tell you anything about the quality and will become completely secondary as soon as you’ve given the record a spin.
