Album Review

Ever since ‘The Beginning’ from 2002, Polish band FADING COLOURS gaining massive public exposure with their collaboration with ex SISTERS OF MERCY guitarist Bruhn and ANNE CLARK, pretty much flew under the radar regarding new releases and live activity except for their performance at Castle Party in 2003. Now in 2009, specifically on 13th March they’re now going to release a next album called ‘Come’.

‘Thorn’ which is opening the album is aside from being an instrumental, a very complex piece of music with a variety of details and sound pieces woven into the mix the strangest for me being a kind of mantra surrounded by gloomy sound veils which keep floating through the next track ‘(I had to) Come’ as well, also being the first vocalized track on the album, introducing De Coy’s very powerful and unique way of singing to the listeners. While the aforementioned rather was a slow piece ‘Be an Angel again’ goes for a faster lane leading straight to the dance floors returning to the medium tempo with ‘Fade Away’ which is especially impressing with its organic drum programming. With the ‘Teutonic Girl’ we’re now flying back to the dance floors. It’s strange but sometimes I think it would work pretty well at a techno party as well, even though there’s lots of additional sound layers and technical gadgets Techno productions mostly lack in my humble opinion. ‘Rose’ floats pretty calmly initially through the use of choirs, piano and percussions but is getting, how can I put that best? Unsettled as the beat joins in. A pity as it’s really a beautiful track but it makes it a bit hard for me to listen to it.

‘Feel’ rounds off the first CD and corrects that flaw again. Here the atmospheres and the accompanying beats match perfectly for me and the track proves to have a few little sonic treats like classical elements I would date to 19th Century judging by their sound and a few aggressive guitar chords. ‘Come’ also features a second CD with 6 additional tracks one of which is ‘Eager Horse’, actually the opening track that with very low-key but diversified rhythmic construction maintains interest for longer than just one spin. Chorals can be found here just as weirdly manipulated and chopped vocal parts. A soft breeze of Eastern ambiance comes over with the distant sound of a sitar before the beat builds up from behind and the track’s shifting to a rougher edge. Also De Coy’s chant processed with plenty of effects appears very hard and remote.

I think with ‘Come’ the FADING COLOURS won’t have any problems making their very patient fans forget the long waiting time for all new material gaining a few new ones as well. It’s good, diversified stuff, pieced together by some guys who obviously know what they’re doing
