Interview with
The Great Old Ones
The Great Old Ones is a band from Bordeaux, inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft and promotes it in their music. TGOO is very much in demand on the European metal-scene now, because of their conceptual and identity. Well, because of the undying interest to the phantasmagorical world of Lovecraft's novels too. About inspiration and heritage of great writer and future plans TGOO - in answers of band.
Reflections of Darkness [RoD]: You have some interesting promo representing band members with H.P. Lovecraft. Do you think H.P. Lovecraft complete (albeit invisible) member of TGOO or is it just a tribute to this writer?
The Great Old Ones [TGOO]: It’s both. Lovecraft spirit and heritage is like the 6th member of TGOO. It’s actually the guideline of the band. We want to pay tribute to HPL and continue his work. Sometimes, TGOO’s music is much an illustration of these novels, sometimes we enlarge its work.
RoD: Your second album is dedicated to the novel ‘At the Mountains of Madness’. Which next novel will be "uncovered" in your music?
TGOO: We are now working on our third LP but I can’t reveal the concept and the novel we will talk about… It’s way too soon.
RoD: Coming back to your genre - what is happening to European Post Black Metal scene? Are there any new projects or releases you could mention?
TGOO: You should look at the next releases of our label Les Acteurs De L’ombre. The second album of our friends Regarde Les Hommes Tomber will be awesome. Listen also to the new Deluge, in Cauda Venenum and Lifestream. All of these bands are unorthodox black metal bands.
RoD: You have a lot of concert tours right now. Which event do you remember most? Where most appreciative audience?
TGOO: We will always remember our first very big stage at Hellfest 2013. It was so impressive. Our two shows opening for Behemoth was also crazy! We were like kids meeting idols… But every show is a new challenge. We can appreciate to play in very small venues in front of forty people. The number doesn’t matter at all.
RoD: Jeff Grimal made cover art for the album Tekeli-Li. How did you meet? Will you continue to work with Jeff?
TGOO: Jeff is one of our guitarist/ singer. He is very talented and knows better than anyone what kind of artwork matches with TGOO’s music. We will continue for sure to use his work.
RoD: What about of video clips? You have any ideas? What track would you like to illustrate and visualize in the first place?
TGOO: We want to do a video clip for a long time but it is very expensive if you want to produce a good quality clip. We imagine an animated movie . Jonas could be a good track for a video clip.
RoD: Why did you choose the label Les Acteurs de l'Ombre Productions?
TGOO: Les Acteurs de L’Ombre productions is a family label. They only release a couple of album each year and work as good as they can to promote their bands. The guys behind Les Acteurs De L’Ombre are passionate and sincere.
RoD: Which other releases of bands working with Les Acteurs de l'Ombre Productions you can mention?
TGOO: As mention before, you should listen to Regarde Les Hommes Tomber, Deluge, in Cauda Venenum and Lifestream.
RoD: I express my thanks to Les Acteurs de l’Ombre Productions for the help in the organization of this interview.
