Album Review

MASSIMO CROCE is an Italian musician living in Cairo, who carries on the tradition of futurist composers of the early 20th century and inserts distorted sounds into creation of his compositions, regarding noise as an integral part of a sound. Recorded in this way, tribute to Luigi Russolo, an experimental composer, painter and the author of the manifesto “L’Arte dei rumori” (The Art of Noises) makes it possible to judge where CROCE draws his inspiration. So, concerning the material itself I must admit it’s really hard to make a definite conclusion. I simply can’t call this mixture of odd sounds with the prevailing portion of noise “music”. But on the other hand, it is obviously a piece of creative work when the artist tries to express himself, his views in the musical sphere.

Besides, the concept of the album gives an opportunity for different interpretations of the compositions which are intended to show the life of a big city. The first track ‘Dinamismo di un automobile’ invites us to look at the bustling streets of the metropolis, when the motion starts. The journey continues and now there appeared new sounds perceived by a girl and then a child observing the life seething around. And the 4th track finishes the whole story and creates the oppressive atmosphere of the funeral penetrating into one’s consciousness. It’s impossible to listen to it twice. In whole, the CD is meant for a narrow circle of people able to understand such work. I used to think that music should help a listener to abstract away from the reality, but on the album there’s presented our everyday life full of noise. So tastes differ.
