Album Review

NORMA BATES is a Swedish punk rock band formed in 2004. The band’s debut single ‘Bow Down’ was released in November 2007 by HGM Records. In 2008, the band got signed by Ninetone Records and released their second single ‘Hey You! Get Down!’ NORMA BATES’ debut album with the same name as the single is released the 20th January 2010.

When you listen to new bands it’s easy to fall into the “compare to other bands thing” because a lot of new music sounds very much the same. I can honestly say that some other bands popped up in my mind when I started to listen to NORMA BATES album but then the need to compare them to other musicians simply feel away. ‘Hey You! Get Down!’ is filled with songs that have good melodies, are well built, and really good vocals. It was not easy to choose my favourite songs on this album but below follows three chosen ones together with the reason why. ‘Bow Down’ is a song that brings a lot of attitude and energy the way it just kicks starts with cool drums and guitar. The beat of the song and the melody together with Julia’s voice creates a song that easily gets stuck on your mind.

‘Dirty Dog’ starts with a sound / feeling like you are raising the volume with every beat of the song - that is cool! The song is faster and rougher with a lot of energy, when I hear it I just want to bounce around and sing along! The music, lyrics and the way Julia sings on this song makes it so much more... hm it’s hard to explain how I feel about this song that instantly became a favourite. ‘Going Under’ is simply brilliant with its lyrics and music; I really like how this song flows with the unexpected calmer part where these lyrics sound “Your time is running out tonight, I think you should know”. With parts like this NORMA BATES shows that they like to surprise you and do things that are unexpected and different and they do it in a way that works very well indeed.

NORMA BATES has created an impressive debut album filled with their own kind of music and style; this is a band to keep your eyes / ears on in the now / future! As often said before in my reviews I look forward to see how this band works/sounds like live.
