Album Review

By releasing their second long-player `People like Gods´, the Belgian electro / industrial project NTRSN fully relies on a classical soundscape big names such as FRONT 242 have become famous for. The new piece of work was created in collaboration with Maurizio Fasolo (PANKOW) and Peter Van Bogaert (LIQUID-G) and is addressed to nostalgic people adoring old school EBM as well as people who simply enjoy crystal-clear electronic beats and analogue sounds connected to the charismatic vocals of Pieter David. In my opinion, `People like Gods´ displays only one drawback: The all in all 14 brilliant tracks are way too short; at least they could have been a bit longer for my taste.

Already the first song `Flashback´ is able to captivate the listener. The as frigid as reduced intro is followed up by the usual booming beats and a feverishly pulsating melody being underlined with energizing shout-like vocals. Thus, the opener sets the course for what will follow: The title track `People like Gods´ which comes up with a retro bass line and hypnotic speech singings that beam you back to the roots of old school EBM. Though `People like Gods´ is audibly committed to traditional stuff, it never gets boring or repetitive. For example, up-tempo `Coming End´ and dynamic `HO!LA!´ (which reminded me a bit of a technoid version of the “Mission Impossible”-theme) are pepped up with a certain pinch of industrial whilst the stamping and analogue `We Hate You´ - an instrumental anthem which could be intended for being used as a score accompanying a weird movie - illustrates a new facet of the album.

I’m still wondering about the reason why the last track remained untitled, as the beautiful and nearly poetic piece really should have deserved a title alike, because it remarks the final point of an ingenious long-player combining traditional influences as well as the courage to modernity.
