Album Review
SCHLAFES BRUDER is one of the bands who managed to learn some lessons from the most successful bands and use their knowledge to create their own unique work. On their album ‘Heute war Gott nicht hier’, it is possible to discover traces of such acts as RAMMSTEIN, WITT, EISBRECHER, or ASP. This musical mix is stuffed with a fantasy story. But since the texts are touching such eternal themes as love, death, faith and friendship, it shouldn’t scare and distract people, who are not really into fantasy worlds. Vocals deserve a separate praise, which are pretty sugary but at the same time are comparable with RAMMSTEIN and WITT. Taking the magical and deep Joachim Witt’s singing manner and spicing them with intonations of Till Lindemann the musicians give their stories bright and quite attractive shapes.
‘Heute war Gott nicht hier’ is absolutely a powerful and commerce oriented piece of work. It represents that kind of perfection, when you’re longing for some mistake. So smooth and polished, that it is done too well. It’s like when you eat something too sweet: On the one hand it is so sweet, you want to puke, but on the other hand it’s so good that, you even want some more. The cover artwork is done in the same way, too much of glittering, shining, plainness and sweetness. But behind this there is such a great energy that loads the listener with lots of positive emotions. Loud rock and metal fantasy pieces like the title track ‘Heute war Gott nicht hier’ are great balanced with calm ballads as marvellous ‘Ich bin Liebe’. The whole album is written in German. It is better if you do understand the language because it will give you a chance to catch some nice metaphors, but if you don’t - it is really enough to know that mostly it tells about love, religion, relationship between different kinds of people. Resuming, this album is quite a nice experience and has good chances to reach out for the wide public. The lovers of the underground music could appreciate this work but find it too commercial as well.
