Album Review

SPIRALARMS is a relatively new sound for rock fans to hear, but the best way to describe them would be a cross between RED LINE CHEMISTRY and BLACK WATER RISING. Their music is melodic, hard, and definitely with hints of progressive metal so it doesn't feel completely monotonous. The opening ‘Dropping Of Flies’ is a bit grunge driven and feels like a more upbeat ALICE IN CHAINS song with just the right amount of churning guitars. Of course, the most recognizable addition for SPIRALARMS is going to be the ever-present keyboard elements, sounding like classical piano on a track like ‘Exit-63’ or more jazz driven on ‘Hold Me To The Sky’. It really helps set SPIRALARMS apart from sounding like another rehash of modern rock that is trying to make it big in a sound that has been far too many times over. Without the keyboard elements, they might have had one or two good hits but the rest would have tired quickly on listener ears.

SPIRALARMS tend to stay away from the traditional ballads that usually help upcoming-mainstream rock artists cement themselves in success as- most of the band's songs are mid paced or fast driven. One song, ‘Lover's Leap’, stands out as a being one of the “slower track”, but SPIRAL ARMS give off more an ethereal sound to their vocals along with the acoustic guitars to keep up with the progressive elements of their music. Some may consider it a bit “whiny”, but the following ‘Tomorrow's Dream’ sheds that notion by returning to the form of BLACK SABBATH and ALICE IN CHAINS inspired raw, chugging music. True, these guys are definitely carving a niche out for themselves in their debut. It isn't quite unique, but still sounds impressive to attract most fans of hard rock in general.
