7th February 2014
Tim Bendzko, Tom Klose & Julia Engelmann

It was Münster in Westphalia/ Germany where TIM BENDZKO celebrated his biggest concert so far. On Friday, 7th February, he played in a sold-out venue in front of 7,000 enthusiastic fans. But before Bendzko entered the stage, Tim Klose was opening the evening and poetry slam star Julia Engelmann celebrated a short intermezzo as well.

Tom Klose

Tom Klose, who opened the evening in Münster together with his friend Niklas Hardt, playing also in his band, grew up in Flensburg where he played already in several bands. 2010 he was moving to Hamburg. Singer / Songwriter Klose is supported in Studio and during live shows by three studied musicians, Martin Schröder (bass), Niklas Hardt (cello) and Max Schneider (drums). Beginning of 2011, the band recorded its first EP with six songs, being released in June 2012 under the name ‘Come Closer’. After appearances at several festivals, amongst them also Rock im Park, Tom is now supporting TIM BENDZKO on his current tour. Tom and Niklas did quite a good job on stage in Münster, even though they had only five songs playing time. In typical singer/ songwriter manner, the songs were quite calm, played only by guitar and cello.

Both musicians were quite nervous since they had never played in front of so many people. The audience soon was into his presentation and happily sang along when asked for. The set was short though, but there is a new album production planned for this year. So we might hear and see Tom Klose somewhere again. /

Julia Engelmann

Julia Engelmann just caused a stir with her appeal on YouTube not to miss your own life… and she touched millions. German actress and poetry slammer Julia won several poetry slam competitions. After some experience as actress, she now studies psychology. The above mentioned YouTube video went viral and was watched already more than five million times. Now, Julia had a short appearance during the TIM BENDZKO tour where she presented in three minutes her poem ‘Stille Wasser sind attraktiv’ (Silent Waters are attractive), being rewarded with huge applause. This was a great little introduction into the gig of Tim, who just started after Julia had left the stage.

Tim Bendzko

German singer / songwriter Bendzko became generally known with his song ‘Nur noch kurz die Welt retten’ and as winner of Bundesvision Song Contest. He started his musical career with eleven when he learned guitar. With sixteen, he started writing own songs. After winning a contest of the band SÖHNE MANNHEIMS, he played with the band in front of 20,000 people at Berlin’s Waldbühne. This was his first big success. 2011 saw the release of his debut album ‘Wenn Worte meine Sprache wären’, reaching position four in German charts. The single ‘Nur noch kurz die Welt retten’ remained 47 weeks in the charts. He supported already big artists, such as ELTON JOHN or JOE COCKER, and also managed a headliner tour in 2012. His second album, ‘Am seidenen Faden’, was released in May 2013. Now, he’s touring to support his release. On tour, he is accompanied by his band (the names seem to be a secret, in the internet you find names like Philip Ritzmann, Fabian Sennholz, Peter Wanitschek, Daniel Hoffknecht and Daniel Hassbecker). Additionally, on his current tour, the line-up was completed by two backing singers. /

Music & Performance
Münster was the biggest indoor venue Tim played in so far, as he stated very proud and also a bit overwhelmed during the show. As he said, the audience was not only the biggest, but also the loudest they had played for so far. And indeed the crowd was big and the venue packed. For more than two hours, the hall turned into a party room where Tim and his band played one hit after another, like ‘Nur noch kurz die Welt retten’, ‘Wenn Worte meine Sprache wären’, ‘Unter die Haut’ and many others. With his songs, Bendzko touches the romantic nerves of his audience, an audience that was mostly female… and kind of young. For one band member, this show in Münster was a home match and as he started, all those people were on his guest list. Of course, not only such a statement got huge applause, also the songs, one of them being even a cover version of the HERBERT GRÖNEMEYER hit ‘Was soll das’.

During the whole show, the audience was very much into the show, was loud, sang a long and clapped along. The mood was really good, even though I think the lyrics are sometimes a bit shallow. But they are perfect for his audience. The songs deal with topics the young audience can identify with. Tim sings of friendship, mostly as he said, and sometimes also of love. One song was about friendship, ‘Unter die Haut’, and was loudly welcomed by the audience. Since there were so few men within the audience, one song was dedicated to all the girls and women in the crowd. It was a song about shopping; it’s title is ‘Auch wenn das gelogen ist’. The first verse of this song was completely sung alone by the audience. Besides the thoughtful songs, there were also a few party tunes, if you can call them that way, like ‘Keine Zeit’.

From the musical to the visual aspect of the show... The stage design was simple but very effective. In the background, five huge white panels were hung up which were illuminated in different colours or also were used as screens for video projections perfectly fitting to the songs. Anything was additionally accompanied by a perfect light show. At the end there is not much left to say… just that anyone obviously had a lot of fun during the show.
