Interview with

Lars Fernström & Mattias Räftegård of Sadman

On 15th January, the Swedish duo SADMAN released the splendid single `I Hide´ which will be followed up by the long-player `9th and Last Life´ in February. We used this as an opportunity to have an e-mail interview with the band that quickly answered our questions concerning expectations, tour plans, idols, fans and self-images.

Reflections of Darkness (RoD): First of all, congratulations on the release of your recent single `I Hide´! I’m looking forward to your new album that will be released on 19th February. What can we expect with regard to `9th and Last Life´?
Sadman: Compared to our first album `Cold in the State of me´, I think this one, `9th and Last Life´, got more space and doors to open for the listener. We still mix the electronic sounds with heavier guitar parts because it’s something we like… and I think we play a bit more with the songs in this new one. We love to change direction of a song… and hopefully it gives the listener an exciting journey.

RoD: What is your source of inspiration while writing and recording? Do you prepare yourselves for the studio work in a special way?
Sadman: I think we are inspired by each other and that we have a lot of fun while we are writing and recording the songs… and we are inspired by life… not just our own lives… everyone’s… I don’t think we have any special goals when we go into the studio; we just start to feel and live with the songs.

RoD: What are your favourite songs taken from `9th and Last Life´? Could you tell us about the stories behind them?
Sadman: The thing is that it changes from day to day… for the moment I listen a lot to a song called `I’m off`, but one song that we recorded early in the process of this album is `9th´ and it gives me a strange feeling each time I listen to it…it got nerve. And the stories behind them better stay with us, so the listeners can have their own stories with them.

RoD: Are there any tour plans for 2010?
Sadman: We have spooked about it a bit and we would like to play more live, so hopefully it will be a tour in spring and we also would like to go outside Sweden and play in countries like Germany, France, Poland and Russia where we got a lot of fans.

RoD: `I Hide´ should be accompanied by a video directed by Rekan Abrahamsson. Would you reveal some details regarding the video shoot?
Sadman: We have decided to wait with the video and make it for the next single from the album… or maybe we will create a strange video ourselves for `I hide´ - future will tell. ;o)

RoD: How would you introduce yourselves to someone who doesn’t know you and your music?
Sadman: That we are a Synth-Rock band more than a pure electronic one. And that we make dark and beautiful songs more than crazy and happy pop songs.

RoD: What bands would you like to tour with in the future?
Sadman: One band that I and Mattias admire is KASHMIR, a Danish band that will release a new album soon… give them a try, they are so great. And to tour with DEPECHE MODE or RECOIL would be a big dream. ;o)

RoD: What are your musical goals for 2010?
Sadman: We hope that our album will satisfy our listeners and that some new will take us to their hearts. And that we can give some concerts for our fans all over Europe… and we will start recording new songs later this year.

RoD: Thank you very much for answering our questions and all the best for your further career!
Sadman: Thank you! It was a pleasure.
