Stereophonics from Wales have represented a certain rock feeling since 24 years. They have an eye on the urgency of a rough, forceful sound while being deeply connected with the tradition of hymnal choruses and thrilling verses. With this tension between alternative rock and fantastic melodies they became true guarantees of success early on. Five of their eight records reached the pole position of the British charts and eleven of their singles achieved an entry into the top 10. Stereophonics return on stage with new material this year. Their ninth record ‘Keep the Village Alive’ will be released on 11th September. Their first big Germany tour since three years will follow between 3rd and 15th October with stops in Hamburg, Frankfurt, Cologne and Munich. When singer and guitarist Kelly Jones founded the band Tragic Love Company in 1992 he never thought he would be considered one of Great Britain's most prolific front men some years later. The name stood as a reminiscence to his three favourite bands The Tragically Hip, Mother Love Bone and Bad Company. This is still audible nowadays since characteristics and qualities of those three rock acts are still existent in the sound of the band which renamed into Stereophonics a year later.
Since the beginning, Stereophonics have stood out with their powerful rock feeling which was unusual for Great Britain. They achieved to merge the harshness of US-alternative rock with pretty melodious harmonies. That's why they were granted huge success for the release of their debut ‘Word Gets Around’ in their home country in 1997. The record entered position six in the charts, four single releases achieved the entry into the top 40. Stereophonics were considered one of Great Britain's most important rock bands after a while. They got the BRIT award for “Best New Group” in 1998.
The following years can be read as a history of success: The records ‘Performance And Cocktails’ (1999), ‘Just Enough Education To Perform’ (2001), ‘You Gotta Go There To Come Back’ (2003), ‘Language. Sex. Violence. Other?’ (2005) and ‘Pull The Pin’ (2007) all stormed the pole position of the British charts. Numerous singles reached the top 10, among them songs like ‘Just Looking’, ‘Mr. Writer’, ‘Maybe Tomorrow’, ‘Dakota’ or ‘Handbags And Gladrags’ which all belong to the solid canon of English rock music and advanced to the position of radio evergreens.
The line-up of the former trio remained constant until 2003. Stereophonics have been four since 2007: The new guitarist Adam Zindani has enriched their sound consistently. Drummer Javier Weyler backed out before the production of the eighth record. ‘Grafitti On The Train’ was recorded with the drummer Jamie Morrison (ex-Noisettes) who is considered a solid member since then and gave the band a powerful freshness. The quartet has recorded their second record in this formation with ‘Keep The Village Alive’ and prove permanence, consistency and progression – even in the 24th band year.
