Super Schwarzes Mannheim with Mesh, Portion Control and Spetsnaz

“Super Schwarzes Mannheim” (Super Black Mannheim) is an event series taking place regularly in Mannheim, taking place at the first Saturday every month. There usually is the club night with dark music plus every now and then there are several live acts. And the date on 7th September offers quite a cool line-up.

First and foremost there is headliner MESH. ‘It’s never enough’ - is not only a song of MESH but the (German) fans of the duo from Bristol, UK, cannot get enough from seeing them live. The former trio was formed in 1991 by Mark Hockings (vocals, lyrics, guitar, keyboards, programming,), Richard Silverthorn (keyboards, programming, backing vocals) and Neil Taylor (keyboards, programming) but in 2006 Neil decided to leave the band in order to focus on his other interests. Mark and Rich decided to go on with MESH. For live shows they have Sean Suleman (drums) and Richard Broadhead (keyboards, backing vocals) as support. They started the first part of their tour in March and April of this year in order to promote their new album ‘AUTOMATION BABY’ mainly all over Germany with a sold out concert in Leipzig.

The album describes a fictional female character representative for a generation that got lost in the world of social media and online shopping and tells with every song a story about it. The music varies from dance- floor hits to some more quite ones. Now they are going for the second part of the tour starting with a show at the ‘M’ERA LUNA FESTIVAL’ followed by further dates in Spain, Russia and Germany of course from September to November and probably some more dates to come. But on the 7th of September they will invite their fans and friends in Mannheim to sing and dance with them. And as the people now had enough time to learn the lyrics of the songs on ‘AUTOMATION BABY’ by heart I’m quite sure it will be awesome. http://www.mesh.co.uk/ / https://www.facebook.com/meshtheband

As second band on that evening we get electro old-schoolers PORTION CONTROL. No, it’s not about weight loss (that’s what you see first when you Google for this band) but instead you will get an overdose of Electronic and Industrial sound. Formed in 1980 in London they split in 1987 worked from 1990 till 1993 as SOLAR ENEMY together to reform as PORTION CONTROL in 2002 again. They released a variety of records on several independent labels and were supporting act for DEPECHE MODE in 1984 on their UK and European tour. The band pioneered the use of sampling and used, to great effect, the Apple II computer based Greengate DS3 sampling and sequencing system. The members John Whybrew and Dean Piavani describe their sound as Style Electro-Punk. I have heard it from the grapevine that someone of MESH likes their music quite a lot but don’t nail me on that. In any case we won’t hear lullaby music but instead a sound that invites us to move along. http://www.portion-control.net/ / https://myspace.com/porcon

Opener for this evening will be SPETSNAZ. The Swedish EBM duo was formed in 2001 by Stefan Nilsson and Pontus Stålberg. SPETSNAZ is the Russian word for Special Forces and this gives you an idea about their sound. Inspired by old school EBM bands like NITZER EBB, FRONT 242, DIE KRUPPS and DAF they wanted to create a counter movement to the present Future-Pop. In November 2006 they cancelled their upcoming tour with AND ONE and rumours were spread that the band split just to learn the other day by their label OUT OF LINE that this is not true but both members will do some side projects, too. They did not only release a couple of albums but were quite busy with doing not inconsiderable number of remixes. With songs like ‘Apathy’ which is well known from the dance floors SPETSNAZ will surely keep the crowd going. And so we will anticipate solid EBM sound. https://www.facebook.com/pages/SPETSNAZ/23395943282

So with these three acts a great evening with music that moves your feet can be expected. So better put your dancing shoes on.
