A four-piece from Beijing, China, rejecting all things kitsch and glittery, cute and packaged, NOVA HEART have been steadily gathering plaudits since forming in 2012. Their quirky, jerky, dark and sexy electronica is completely at odds with everything else around it, and yet so absolutely of the moment that everyone from artists, fashionistas and even, shudder, hipsters have been clamouring to sing their praises. There’s mad space-rap and handclaps on ‘No Controvesy’, cool art-house cinema-scapes on opener ‘Drive To Our End’, spooky disco on ‘Evil’ and even a bizarre, addictive cover of ‘Dancing Barefoot’.
Conclusion: Bursting with genuine diversity and quality song-writing, NOVA HEART will no doubt continue their steady climb skywards. I hope so. Unfettered creativity such as this needs space to flourish.
