2 years after ‘Symmetry In Black’, Kirk Windstein and his boys are back with new material. ‘The Serpent Only Lies’ is full of heavy riffs influenced by TROUBLE and TYPE O NEGATIVE's debut album but also from the band's first albums. After 17 years, Todd “Sexy T” Strange is back on bass and maybe that's why in this album there is a smell of old CROWBAR. My favorite songs of the album are the heavy, doom, sludge ‘Falling While Rising’, the full of heavy riffs and powerful drumming ‘Plasmic and Pure’, the MOTÖRHEAD influenced ‘The Serpent Only Lies’, the TYPE O NEGATIVE influenced ‘Surviving The Abyss’ and the heavy, sludge ‘As I Heal’. A plus for the album is Kirk's voice which fits perfect with the music and the straight forward honesty in the lyrics.
Conclusion: CROWBAR released one of their best albums, an album full of heavy, strong and in some parts groovy music with strong vocals and lyrics!
