Review Flash

MAGIC CIRCLE is a five piece Doom band from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts formed in 2011, ‘Departed Souls’ is their third full-length album and I have to ruefully admit they flew under my radar until recently. The label was, once again, ready and willing to quickly provide me with the vital stuff I needed to review this pleasant surprise. This is Metal, doomy, Blues filled and with a big dose of classic Rock. The rhythm section consisting of drummer Q, bass man Justin DeTore and guitar duo Dan Ducas and Chris Corry is hard at work and those dudes know their craft. The material varies between psychedelic Rock and Doom, it’s heavy but spherical, relaxing but never once boring. Vocalist Brendan Radigan (also live singer for PAGAN ALTAR) is more than an addition to the New England band, his voice demands the listener’s attention but is never too dominant for the overall musical experience. MAGIC CIRCLE is Doom Metal but I also detect a relatedness to bands like VINTAGE CARAVAN or even LED ZEPPELIN without imitating or orienting themselves as much as bands like GRETA VAN FLEET.

Conclusion: One of the highlights of this year for me, a good addition to listening sessions of PALLBEARER, SPIRIT ADRIFT or KHEMMIS. Check out ‘Hypnotized’ and tell me what you think.
