Album Review

Do you like HOCICO and SUICIDE COMMANDO? Well, then you might have already acquired taste for Mexican Harsh Electro outfit C-LEKKTOR. Their new release ‘X-Tension In Progress’ follows on their debut ‘The Silence Progression’ (2008) and the remix release ‘Tendencias Suicidas’ (2010). Enticing the fear of Apocalypse, with the Mayan 2012 prophesy in mind, this is a soundtrack for the impending doom of humankind. You’ve had plenty of time to prepare then as it was already released in April and the Doomsday is scheduled for December. The chance is then that you already span this around the earlobes, well, and in that case you’re not really the one bothering to read this review but must be someone still curious about it.

Concerning the apocalyptical mist surrounding the release it feels weirdly “lighter” than their previous work, a bit of a departure from past. I can’t say though that they’ve created their own niche entirely with it, but they have assembled a great succession of songs, stream-lined on the atmosphere (there is not so much of menacing, hellish soundscapes here, the word is more minimalistic), but still detailed enough. This is in line with the fact that they had announced to have taken more of the “bad ass Hardcore” attitude with their sophomore creation. Well, anyhow, in this apocalypse you shall dance! Many songs do really seem to be meant exactly for that aforementioned dance-opportunity. Nice touches are the old radio-like intro of ‘Dark Reflection’ that gives it a creepy feeling, like an old, decrepit motel where murder victims’s ghosts are haunting it whether or not there is some lonesome soul there to witness it.

The use of female vocals in ‘In The Other Life’ is interesting in that seemingly chaotic and disorienting song, mock-operatic to clean they seem to express the song’s emotion quite well. ‘Sick Of You’ is propelled into the album’s representative of a bridge between the new direction of their present sound and their past adventures, it does stand out in that way. It certainly feels to be a dreamier song within which ethereal hypnosis lays the danger (and exciting) element – just like their previous work. It’s an album which may need several listens to get a real taste and appreciation of it. It also entices one for what may come in future for this band as they seem to want to step out of shadows of both HOCICO and SUICIDE COMMANDO; they certainly have enough talent and imaginative enterprise to do so. A sure should-have, whether the apocalypse is really coming or not!
