Album Review

It has been some time since anyone heard anything from Norwegian based Thrash assaulters, DERIDE. Now, almost after a nine year break, they are back and efficient as ever with their third full length assault, ‘The Void’. Still as catchy and groove oriented as their beginnings back in 1995, the group has incorporated more modern elements of Groove Metal within their sound such as on the track ‘Dead To Me’. A mix of the harsh bellowing vocals with some growling and an easy pace makes this album very accessible for most newcomers to Metal and Thrash in general without the extreme speed or technical solos. At the same time, like on most Thrash or Groove records, there is a slight monotony during the verse sections with the riffs, but fortunately DERIDE attempts to make the riffs not seem too bland or generic. Just hearing the riffs on ‘All Must Be Revealed’ has some nice Melodic Death Metal influences within the music, but on a different track like ‘Only One’, the chug-a-thon just seems a bit too overplayed when compared to groups like THROWDOWN or HATEBREED.

Not all the tracks are as simple or clear cut as the “average Groove Metal”. ‘Fallen’ throws in some technical riffs that sound like a buzz saw or Ambient Metal- not the best choice for Groove. However, the band mixes it up with decent riffs here and there, and when listening into the track for a minute it really creates a dark, almost horror atmosphere without seeming cliché or generic. ‘Devil In Me’ picks up the pace a bit and even throws in a decent solo, certainly bringing back memories of DERIDE’S older Thrash origins. And of course ‘Lesson Learned’ mixes the best on the Thrash and melodic side for a well balanced closer of Groove-Thrash altogether through varied pace. Overall the album is not groundbreaking but ‘The Void’ still shows that after so long DERIDE can still puncture ears with some decently arranged music.
