Album Review

Facts about this project’s history are rare except the one that Austrian-based Daniel Graves is the sole member behind this dark electro project and released a very successful album with ‘Close to Human’ in 2005. Besides that, he’s a more melody-focused electro project called NECESSARY RESPONSE.

‘The Violence’ is a creepy, short intro with slow, muffled and atmospherics darkening the skies. After that intro I was expecting something big to come; imagine my disappointment when the first chimes of ‘Spit it out’ sounded and I came to realize that a good intro not necessarily leads to a good song. Spit it out’ is nothing more and nothing less than an up-beat shuffler with typically distorted vocals as well as pushing beats and sequences. The next one ‘Schadenfreude’ can be filed into the club category as well and provides for full dance floors and sweat dripping down from the ceiling. ‘The Siren’ introduces clean chant over a stomping beat. Reminds more of Daniel’s other project NECESSARY RESPONSE, but he should stick to his more sonorous vocals as the higher pitches, like in the chorus, are too high for him in my opinion. ‘A Quite Anthem’ is a real surprise, shifting a few gears down and you’ll spot much more layers in the sound, small details wide strings piano and different vocal styles to point out to the changing emotional states in the song. But with the next song it already goes back to the dance floor, however ‘Living The Wasted Life’ comes up with a more detailed arrangement.

‘The Great Depression’ kicks you out of your socks and a murderous bass blasts through the room. A little brash of sound gadgetry is hidden in the song’s rear. ‘Pale’ is already being played extensively in the clubs so it should be familiar to many people already. Vocals on the track have been alienated so they do sound like a robot. Now and then the old evil distorted style comes through. ‘Arsenic on the Rocks’ is quite an unspectacular instrumental with basically the same structure than ‘Spit it out’ only that it’s a little slower and darker. The album closer ‘The Ones’ yet again shows the other side of AESTHETIC PRFECTION with nice melodic passages, sophisticated arrangement and good chant.

‘The Ones’ and ‘A Quiet Anthem’ are my favourites on the album as they show that there’s more to AESTHETIC PERFECTION than the ability of producing club hits, but hat is the main focus of the album which I think will work out very well in that area.
