Album Review

Founded in 1997, as nameless project, the name soon changes to SVEN WEST who also was a member of the project by the time. The name CEPHALGY, which is a Latinization of the German Zephalgie, meaning Headache, came up after the project got signed to the German label Out of line, where they debuted with ‘Engel Sterben Nie’ in March 2004, followed by ‘Finde deinen Dämon in October 2005 and the ‘Moment der Stille EP’ a good year later.

In the past CEPHALGY have been accused by many people of sounding like BLUTENGEL, TERMINAL CHOICE and they weren’t so far off: Cheesy lyrics, simplistic structures to conquer every Goth teen’s heart instantly. Now it’s 2008 and close to the end we’ll see the release of their new album ‘Herzschlag’ starting with ‘Erlöse mich’ (Release me) and ‘Schwarze Göttin’ (Black Goddess) and who’d have thought that? Dark electro sounds with fitting vocals, much dance appeal, refined with samples and spherical layers come out of the speakers. ‘Hass mich’ puts a little more pressure on the bass drum and with the guitars in the back; it sounds quite similar to TERMINAL CHOICE. ‘Tränen zu Staub’ winds down with an increased focus on the melodies. ‘Du’ (You) comes up with female vocals I think I’ve heard somewhere before, however the song drowns in cheesy lyrics, if you like that this is the right one for you. We’re going to shuffle a little in ‘I’ll survive’ which is going to fill the dance floors of the dark dance temples for sure, again there’s lots of melody inside - spherical layers and chorals for the most part. “Touch him, my switch, because I’m an electroholic”. Well, perhaps it would be better sometimes not to do any vocals instead of delivering such nonsense, but what the mass wants it gets. ‘Müde’ can be described as Goth Electro Rock Ballad with much pathos and ‘Schutzengel’ is another typical dance track and in essence this does apply on the following tracks ‘Königin’ and ‘Herzschlag’. On the last track ‘Tiefer’ there’s a little more rhythm coming in, but that’s all.

The Ltd. Edition comprises a second CD with 4 additional new tracks, perfectly blending in with the album’s theme, even if they’re a little more aggressive like ‘Unsterblich’ and Liebe’ show clearly with their pushing rhythms and in case of ‘Unsterblich’ rock guitars. The other four tracks are remixes at least getting a few new faces out of the tracks. Especially the Shizophobia RMX of ‘Königin’ has to be named here turning the original into an insane paranoid beat mayhem.

Dead honest, people, is that what you want to hear nowadays? What’s up to date in the scene? You can’t be serious. Even if the lyrics won’t pick up any bloody Goth cliché that’s available on the planet, the music itself would be standard at best. The vocals show no variation, it always has to be dark and stuff, deal with pain, relief, and death etc. - music that makes little Goth girls happy. I once thought the music in the Goth scene was about delivering a deeper message, providing more content than the mainstream. Well, it seems like this is not that important to many artists and fans anymore.
