And One, Cephalgy, Obscenity Trial
On Thursday the 23rd November, we went to the PULP in DUISBURG to visit the popular German band AND ONE. The PULP is a very nice location like an old castle with nice archaic interior decoration. The rumors about the last concerts were very promising and the location was sold out. Unfortunately we were delayed by a traffic jam on the highway, so that we missed the first support band OBSCENITY TRIAL. Later we found out that AND ONE were be delayed by the traffic jam too.
CEPHALGY
The second support band CEPHALGY was engaged as a replacement for SPETSNAZ because they had aborted the tour after a quarrel in itself. CEPHALGY was formed in 1997 under the name of SVEN WEST, some members left the band, other members joined in and today CEPHALGY consist of JÖRG (lyric, composition) RONNY (Keyboards) and STELLA (Keyboards). For the show in DUISBURG, singer JÖRG brought only his keyboard player with him, so there were only two persons on stage. http://www.cephalgy.de/
Music
The music of CEPHALGY is kind of dark EBM with pushing danceable beats, catchy melodies and dark lyrics. The set included seven tracks taken from the both available album releases FINDE DEINEN DÄMON and ENGEL STERBEN NIE, started by WER ICH BIN and finished by ENGEL STERBEN NIE.
Performance
The singer, dressed in a black suit and sun glasses, often tried to animate the audience but they didn't follow him mostly, and finally at the 10th times that he asked "Are You ready for AND ONE" it was a little bit bothering. Probability primary planned was a shortened set, because MILES AWAY was announced as the last song. After the song the band did say goodbye and wanted to leave the stage but the backing music went on and they performed another song. After it, they finally finished the show and left the stage.

02. Dying World
03. From My Hands

AND ONE
After a break to change the stage setting, the evening went on with the headliner AND ONE. AND ONE are one of the most famous Synth-Pop bands in Germany. Inspired by DEPECHE MODE and other electro acts of the eighties, Steve Naghavi - the mastermind of the band - created a lot of hits like TECHNO MAN, PANZERMENSCH, DEUTSCHMASCHINE, SOMETIMES or METALHAMMER just to mention a few. In every electro club in Germany very often you can find AND ONE on the play-lists. And always when the DJ is playing an AND ONE-song, the floor is crowded.
The current album BODYPOP was released in September this year and entered the German Media Control Charts at #30 and the German Alternative Charts at #1. The upcoming single TRAUMFRAU will be released on 1st December 2006. AND ONE are: STEVE NAGHAVI (voice, music, production), GIO VAN OLI (keyboards, backing vocals) and CHRIS RUIZ (keyboards, vocals) http://www.andone.de/ / http://www.myspace.com/andonemyspace
Music
What a fantastic show! About 2.5 hours the audience was charmed by a potpourri of songs taken from all periods of the band’s history. Great well-known hits like TECHNOMAN, SOMETIMES, FÜR or WASTED were alternated with songs taken from the current album and funny songs like KLAUS or PIMMELMANN, which are particularly loved by the fans. Supplementary they performed a few nice cover versions like THE WALK (original by THE CURE) or TOGETHER FOREVER (original by RICK ASTLEY). Again, they also built in parts of other artist’s songs into own songs, for example PERSONAL JESUS into WASTED or SWEET DREAMS into KRIEGER. These funny elements were known and loved by the fans.
As usual, CHRIS sung some songs alone or together with STEVE and for the first time GIO sang a song too, namely CONSEQUENCE OF TIME. The main set finished with STEINE SIND STEINE, taken from the EP FRONTFEUER which is attached to the limited edition of BODYPOP. The first encore started with RECOVER YOU, followed by a cover version of TOGETHER FOREVER (RICK ASTLEY) and a great medley of 8 songs. The second encored begun with BODY COMPANY taken from the current album, followed by FÜR, GET YOU CLOSER and the all time hit TECHNOMAN. The third and last encore included SCHMERZENGEL - a B-side of SO KLINGT LIEBE - and acoustic versions of the funny songs KLAUS and PIMMELMANN.
Performance
During the first sounds of the intro DEIN ENDE the both keyboarders GIO VAN OLI and CHRIS RUIZ entered the stage and took their places behind the keyboards. Finally STEVE NAGHAVI entered the stage as well and was welcomed with cheers by the audience. At the beginning of the show, GIO had some problems with his microphone and the rowdies entered the stage several times to repair it. Altogether it was one of the greatest shows of AND ONE I’ve ever seen. STEVE is a real entertainer, all the time he was running, dancing and posing all-around the stage. Between the songs he did some jokes and spoke to the audience. First he was dressed in a black suit with an orange tie, during the song CONSEQUENCE OF TIME which was performed by GIO, STEVE changed his clothes and was dressed then in a white shirt with a black tie.
At the songs that were performed by CHRIS, he was running and posing too in front of stage. The show was long but never boring. Sometime during the concert CHRIS had spilled some water on stage and later he did try to swab this with a towel and STEVE helped him by this with funny comments. On this evening I was dressed with a merchandise-jacket of the last DEPECHE MODE -tour and at the song WASTED with the included part of PERSONAL JESUS (DEPECHE MODE) I swayed my jacket like a banner. As STEVE recognized it, he took my jacket onto stage and presented the DEPECHE MODE-logo to the audience - very crazy. I think after the show everybody in the house was happy and satisfied! Really a great show, a genial setlist and band and audience in a good temper.
