Artist: And One
Genre: Electronic
Release Date: 30th October 2009
Label: Out of Line

Introduction

It seemed like this was going to become one of those so called “Never-ending Stories”. Already in 2006, first rumours about an AND ONE DVD started circling. But it should take years before everything was at a stage allowing showing something of it at a festival. Planned as a one disc edition, the project grew to what has seen the light of day on 30th October as the package entitled ‘Live’.

Detailed Review

Already the design turns out as eye-turner. Though it is kept strictly simple in red with the band title and release name placed on red ground it has a precious look. When opening the digipak, you’ll see the 2 DVD’s and a booklet with an AND ONE “poem” and lots of live pictures. Now that I’ve probably put a strain on your thin patience with the description of the packaging already, let’s see if the content can live up to what it promises. The first 8 tracks highlighted by the name ‘Diana’ were filmed in Berlin in 2008, starting with flashing pictures that introduce to ‘The Sun Always Shines on TV’. Once the curtain has dropped, the party starts and entertainer Steve Naghavi gives his all already with the first song of a set that also includes the crowd pleaser ‘Timekiller’. However, the focal point of the first DVD is entitled ‘Steffi’, filmed in Hamburg in 2006 and up in the North, the mood’s not as cold as they always say.

Everywhere you can see people jumping, dancing, and singing in thrall of the beat when the camera shows the crowd. The closing act is made by some kind of medley fusing songs like ‘Loser’, ‘Driving with my Darling’, or ‘Second Voice’ to one continuous marathon, which shows how amazing the interaction between the band and their fans is, culminating in an a capella performance of ‘Pimmelmann’. The first concert block ‘Julia’ on the second disc takes off harder with ‘Strafbomber’ and its raging timbre to end with the rather serene ‘Speicherbar’, seeing a Steve Naghavi in top vocal shape. In-between it’s all complete AND ONE madness. I just needed to hear the first statement Steve makes upon entering the stage to the first title ‘Military Fashion Show’ under the moniker of ‘Mandy’ and knew exactly that this was a recording of my first AND ONE live experience at M’era Luna 2007.

I still remember very vividly how I felt like a flipper ball with all the pogo dancing people around jumping against me and some friends all the time. If you haven’t seen any of the AND ONE video clips so far, but always wanted to, this DVD gives you the chance to see them all in 9 episodes. A little backstage film rounds off the package before my little highlight of this disc is coming up with the very first performance ever from 1989. Back then, the band called themselves BODY CONTROL. Complemented by Steve’s commentaries this is one hilarious piece of video footage that absolutely made my day.

Conclusion

This is all an AND ONE fan could ever hope to get. Besides tons of live material showing Steve and his partners in crime in action, giving you a really good idea what’s going down at one of their live shows, you’ll get a flood of bonus material with that completely weird live performance from the past as icing on the cake. All this is being presented in a neat looking package and with a picture and sound quality way above average. Not being released with the DVD as package but simultaneously with it is a double CD with white packaging. It’s giving you the compressed essence of what can be seen on the DVD. You can sum everything up with one sentence: It was completely worth the wait!
