Album Review
The Swedish band DISKOTEKET was founded in Uppsala in 2002 and pulls out has pulled out its first self-titled release on Af-Music.
So you’re not wondering why you can’t understand anything, it’s all in Swedish. That shouldn’t keep you from listening attentively to the music of the four-piece which is very well crafted and coated with a heavy 80s feeling what might be due to a special way they’ve recorded the songs in. The most striking instrument of the band for sure is the all overshadowing voice of singer Ann-Karin taking in all your attention when she’s starting throwing out the words after the short instrumental introduction on the opener ‘Ge mig ljuset’ At some points I fear her voice is breaking away every moment. It feels like she’s drifting into some sort of ecstatic trance from time to time. A prime example of that is the second song ‘Steg för steg’ carried by a strong fundament of bass, pounding drums and while soothing pads caress the soul. ‘Dödsstöten’ opens with harried-sounding breathing noises then there’s an a-cappella performance of Ann Karin and first a few seconds later the rest of the instruments pipes up. ‘Blå timmen’ is the name of the last song starting with darkly chiming bells later to be joined by wave-esque guitar lines and dark atmospherics before the drumming eventually kicks in and a little lighter yet melancholy-tinged mood takes hold.
If the fact that all the vocals are in Swedish doesn’t bother you than you should have a listen here as ‘Diskoteket’ really deliver a good mixture of Wave and dashes of Goth rock.
