Album Review

A breakdown of BOB DYLAN’s entire musical history would generate enough text to make a novel out so I’m going to confine myself to the most recent event in his career and that is the release of his 46th album: ‘Together Through Life’.

You can call me crazy but I’m steadily getting reminded by the opener ‘Beyond Here Lies Nothin'’ of ‘Unchain My Heart’ of JOE COCKER. I’m hearing a resemblance in the melody, but now I’m going to get back to the actual song which is using a lot of accordion besides a rather traditional set of instruments. The album now continues with Dylan’s contribution to the movie ‘My Own Love Song’ titled ‘Life is Hard’, a track that has got the Blues in his heart, a brushing rhythm scuffling forward, heavy, dragging you down but through the airy guitars gets sort of a Mediterranean flair and atmosphere while Bob’s calling out that “Life is Hard / Without you near me”. ‘My Wife’s Home Town’ brings an in the most true sense of the word traditional Blues sound with it; a sound as it was on the agenda about 40 or 50 years ago and when one’s hearing Bob’s raspy voice singing “I just wanna tell that hell’s my wife’s home town” there’s no wondering anymore about the colour of these track: It’s coal black! A little bit of a Mexican flavour resonates within the boundaries of the beautiful ‘This Dream of You’ and ‘I Feel a change comin' on’ is in my opinion the highlight on the album .It takes you’ it sprays an intensity that is rarely to be found anymore nowadays. Just take listen and convince yourself of it.

As I simply don’t know enough of the broad works of BOB DLAN I won’t and can’t tell you if this is the best album he’s put out in years but I can assure you that once you give these record a spin you’ll feel the heart’s blood and all the emotions and thoughts that has gone into them. The production is precisely accurate, that is, not too much and not too little. Just the right amount of instruments at the right time! A definitely positive surprise for me this record!
