Album Review

Started as solo project around 1998/99 by Oliver Falk, the project grew to a real band over the years and in 2001 released the single ‘Elis’ and the album ‘Twilight’. At some point on the way, Oliver and the other band members parted ways due to several circumstances and he ended up being the only member of ERBEN DER SCHÖPFUNG again until 2005. That year, Dina Falk and Rino Vetsch were added to the line-up and other members would gradually follow. 8 years after the first album, they’re going to release the second full length ‘Narben der Zeit’ on 20th November.

Sounds of radio frequency tuning complemented by various samples open the album and also its first track ‘Frequency’, before pounding electronic beats reach out for your legs to turn to organic drums with metal riffs afterwards. Classical piano passages and female vocals, which not always do sound good here, complete the track. ‘Jane Churm’ summons dark and bleak soundscapes wallowing in orchestral bombast and metal harshness. The transition from electronics to metal instrumentation comes way too abrupt here however. Vocals do sound better this time, and even more on the following piano ballad ‘Homeless’ where they get some more room to unfold. ‘Leaving’ again combines beauty and cruelty in already experienced manner. This track’s biggest flaw in my opinion is the flat sound of the drums. They don’t have any punch, which is getting a little better on the album closer ‘Twisted’ but still leaves big room for improvements, while the string sections are well executed again.

The production, especially the recording quality of the drum parts on ‘Narben der Zeit’, could use some substantial improvement. Too often it just sounds too flat and lacks the force Metal drums should have in my eyes. Also the band must find a way to fuse the Metal and electronic rhythms better, getting more fluent transitions between them. Symphonic Metal fans and club goers should at least check the record out as it’s not a bad one after all.
