Album Review

DEMONICA is an American / Danish Thrash Metal band, founded in 2008 with former members of MERCYFUL FATE and FORBIDDEN, wanting to serve Old School Thrash Metal with new elements and a dangerous spirit. In 2010, the first album, ‘Demonstrous’ will be released.

Right from the very first track, ‘Demon Class’ point out that there are not about any compromises: fast, murderous thrash metal with technical sophistication and a bit SLAYER orientated vocals. This is how thrash metal has to sound like; the guitar fraction is doing an excellent job, combining heaviness and speed without appearing too modest or uninspired. In ‘Ghost Hunt’, a rather slow intermezzo gives the listener the first break to take a breath. But, unsurprisingly, this moment does not last for very long. The refrain emerges pretty grooving and catchy without being cheesy or mainstream-orientated. ‘My Tongue’ begins with a remarkable riff and somehow whispered vocals. This song again grooves a lot but remains in a more slow area of speed (which has to be seen relatively, of course).

‘Luscious Damned’ remarks an extremely fast and aggressive song, at times veering towards the death metal corner, also with a chorus that is surely suitable to shout along during a live set. Somehow, DEMONICA does not provide the most original songs and structures ever made, but it is anyhow a relief to discern that today’s music society is still capable of creating straight-forward, superior metal. It goes without saying that the guitar work on this record is of high quality and entirely enjoyable. Pretty much every track consists of a guitar solo, yet this does not come off as artificial or forced. ‘Alien Six’ furthermore is a very brutal song and really melodious elements are a rare thing on this record. Yet, this is definitely not needed. ‘Palace of Glass’ also is endued with an interesting bass-line and aggressive, furious drumming. Subsequently, the refrain is very catchy and somehow dark elements also found their way to this song.

The song ‘Fast and Furious’ is forsooth self-explanatory, for it underlines the message of DEMONICA in only one song. The vocals on ‘Summoned’ at times appear a bit too modern, nu-metal orientated for my listening pleasure. ‘Astronomica’ serves as the last dance and longest song at the same time. It begins with a yet slow, atmospheric part but soon gains speed and groove. It probably illustrates the most diversified song on the album, containing quite some changes in speed and having no vocals at all. Yet, the whole eight minutes do not offer a boring moment at all. ‘Demonstrous’ is a must-listen for every lover of extreme and/or technical metal, who loves the combination of modern and traditional attitudes.
