Album Review

CATAMENIA's existence started out already in the mid 1990s. The second of their demos got them a record deal with Massacre Records and in 1998 the first album 'Hails of Frozen North' was released. An EP and the second album 'Morning Crimson' already followed in 1999. 10 years onward from there, the band that faced a lot of line-up changes started the recording of their 9th long player named 'Cavalcade' which is soon to be released.

Bloody riffs claw into the auditory channels soon to be followed by the faster drums of the opener 'Blood Trails', and the nagging injects terror into the system. At the same time the band keeps a nicely melodic backdrop alive in their black composition. Anthemic melodies meet up with mid-paced drums on the second and title track of the album. Here it's not only screams, used as vocal device but also extremely low grunts are being utilized, which is not exactly the type of vocals I usually prefer. 'The Path That Lies Behind Me' then again is something for the speed freaks among you, chaining savage riffs to brutal rhythms and brining back the nagging also. If you're a little into the prog genre this track might be interesting for you as well.

'The Vulture's Feast is the closest thing to a ballad you'll get to hear on 'Cavalcade' and as such it brings forth the melodic qualities of the band extensively, and this includes a higher emphasis on those style of vocals as well. They should be making more songs with more vocals like that. CATAMENIA offers a neat stylistic mix and even for non Black Metal listeners this could be a record to find pleasure in. I found some.
